Hi,
I’m currently investigating upgrading to ND6 from R5.0.11. We want to upgrade the clients first, then at a later date (possibly months later), to upgrade the mailfiles. The servers will already be running ND6, prior to us effectively using a silent install (there is a specific reason for this) to perform the client upgrade.
We want to upgrade the mailfiles in a controlled method, without user intervention. I know I can use the mail convert utility, but think that the use of policy documents may be better and give us greater flexability. The question I have is, can I upgrade using a silent install, then at a later date assign a policy, then assign a desktop policy to upgrade the mailfile template?
I may be reading the help incorrectly, but it seems to imply that I can only assign a policy at the time I run setup for a user, is that correct? (we want to assign the desktop policy to upgrade the template after the actual client upgrade).
Any replies, greatly appreciated.

Bummer, but you are right that the redbook says a setup policy only ‘activated’ just after a setup has occurred. That was our experience also.
We did the template upgrade with a setup policy and it worked well. I set the users an email with a button so they could initiate the upgrade when they choose to.
I think it would be more confusing to the users if you upgrade the client, but not their mail template. It would be like getting half of ND6.

Hi, I think I have just recently done something similar to what are trying to achieve. Basically I used the upgrade by mail to send out the message to users who trigger the automated installation of the client. Next I created a desktop settings policy.
On the basics tab fill out the Mail Template Information, I just configured:
If Running this version of notes : Release 6.0.1 Use this mail template : mail6.ntf
You can then assign this policy explicitly or organizational when you want the upgrade of the mail files to automatically occur.
