Problems installing second Domino server in a home/test environment

I have two PC’s at home - a desktop running Domino 7.01 server (Home1/Home) and a laptop running Domino 7.01 notes clients. I have it running as my own test setup; nothing fancy.

I am attempting to install Domino server on my laptop. I have a valid server ID (Home2/Home) created in the Domino Directory.

Home1/Home is running on a hard-coded IP address of 192.168.1.100 (private IP addressing schema). I have a Hosts file linking Home1/Home to 192.168.1.100.

My Notes clients on my laptop have no problems connecting to Home1/Home.

When I attempt the install of Home2/home on my laptop – on the section requesting the source of the Domino Directory –

I list Home1/Home with the optional network address of 192.168.1.100. But it always fails on the install - ‘the server is not responding.’

I’ve checked my Zone Alarm and Windows Firewall settings but nothing seems out of whack there.

Suggestions???

Sounds like a name resolution problem to me.

Hosts files are normally used to resolve NetBios names. That is, you cannot put the Domino Domain Name in the hosts file (as far as I know). Thus the entry in the hosts file should read Home1

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I should have clarified my original post to note that my hosts file has both Home1/Home and Home1 entries.

Stanley,

I’ve done this kind of thing many times and found the best solution for our dismal home networks is as follows (Box = hardware, Server = software):

  1. Assume Server1 is totally set up and running

  2. On Server1, create the new server so that an id file and N&A Book entry are created

  3. On box2, do your domino install and copy over via network the id and N&A Book (so it’s a replica copy) and notes.ini

  4. Manually edit the notes.ini to change the pathing if necessary, and the server name, appropriately

  5. Go through the setup process now, which should be trivial because it’ll find a notes.ini and N&A Book all set up for it

hope that helps,

raphael

Thanks for the response. Sounds straightforward enough and similar to something I did with a work colleague a few years ago when we ported one server to another to a new box.
