POP3 Protocol Error -- again

Like Marco Kuiter in January, I’ve installed a Notes client on a PC (lets call it A) and am trying to retrieve mail from a POP3 server. I get a “POP3 Protocol Error” message when I try to retrieve the POP3 mail. Checking log.nsf I find entries saying “POP3Client: -ERR invalid password: POP3 Protocol Error Returned”.

Now this is the strange part: I’m absolutely sure the POP3 client password is correct. Furthermore, the identical (as far as I can tell) POP3 account on a different Client PC (lets call it B) works with no problem.

In general I’m experiencing some frustration trying to configure these clients. It seems to take time for changes to kick in. For example, I tried using the wrong password for PC B and it kept working for a while before it finally stopped. I am also trying to get PC B (working again) to not leave messages on the server, but this change is not taking effect.

Anyone have any words of wisdom to offer on these points?

Pop3 usually works ok for me, the passwords do take a while to kick in but you can reload services or the server to force it, i.e. tell pop3 q , tell router q, tell smtp q or tell http q, and the load smtp etc. this works especially for domain name or mail routing changes & Configuration. The acid test to help you with internet passwords working or not is to use internet explorer to contact the mail file (http://serverip/mail/yournam.nsf) and see if the username and password your trying for pop allows you access. If it doesn’t then reset the password again. Also in the Admin client you can restart the server from the server tab and it is very quick and tends not to disrupt users. Noes does chuck up dodgy errors sometimes so test the basics on computer A and make sure ip is ok and do the internet test I suggested.Hope this helps

Subject: RE: POP3 Protocol Error – again

I found the issue: Lotus expects only one POP3 account per server. You can’t do like in Outlook and configure multiple mailboxes from the same POP3 server – if you try to put in a second account it gets confused. There are several obvious potential workarounds, and also material about this issue in other threads (search on Multiple POP3) which I’ll investigate.
