After all the hard work done to make HUGE improvements in the UI on the Notes Standard client I still have people telling me that it looks “old” because that’s their first impression when seeing a Notes Workspace.
It would be awesome to be able to use any 32x32 image (jpg, gif, png, bmp, etc) as the icon while still being able to retain the old 16 color icon for older clients.
This suggestion was posted on IdeaJam as well and is the 3rd most popular suggestion on there.
I wonder how far back this request has been on the books? I doubt that it’s something IBM isn’t aware of that customers and partners have been wanting since 16bit icons went out of style.
Yes, I know that it’s too late for 8.5, but should be done no later than 9.0.
Subject: I am sure it is on the lists for a long time. So why didn’t it allready make it?
Most likely IBM internaly it is a question of grouping and packaging requests that belong together from a developer point of view. Then it takes priorities/decissions. The icon is on the one hand so visible and realy everyone still using the workspace -there is a lot of us out there- sees them, on the other hand, what would be the answer when the sales folks get asked ‘how many more sales wins woul we have had if it was there’ - tough to answer for something like this, but how else should a feature like this be compaired to -lets say out of the box compression of attachments in mailfile with a better algorythm or detachable smarticons or something?
UI stuff got a lot better, in the last years. http://www.notesdesignblog.com gets you right to the desks of those hard working people trying to figgure out where to go next in Westford, MA (where a lot of the stuff is actually developed). If you don’t mind the time to start thinking in what they call ‘personas’ (lets say a given user provided by IBM, with a name, let’s say doing marketing and using Notes and Office and some other Apps, having a Notebook and travelling - there is several of them, there could have been a mac user at the home office with different skills instead or something) - your input would become even more valuable for IBM. But you would have to start moving around in the world of ‘Samantha’ (one of the better known personas) and maybe a few others, relevant for your input and try to learn who they are and how they think.
