Hi All
All I seem to do is post questions on this forum I must go on a developer course!
Anyway I have a button on my form that brings up a picklist based on a view in my database, the user then selects a record and the results is put into a field on my form, this is good apart from there could be thousands of records to scroll through. Is there a way to put a full text search on the picklist so that a user can say type in the word white and it will show only the records with the word white in the description. Also the first column on my PickList view is StockCode. This stockcode consists of department then an number, for example.
CS-IT001
CS-IT004
CS-ENG001
CS-ENG003
Is there a way for me to put a drop down menu on this Picklist view that has.
CS-IT
CS-ENG
CS-ACL
etc
etc
So when one of the above is chosen it only shows the records that begin with it?

Subject: @Picklist Search functionality
Not to be rude, but a developers course may not be such a bad idea
There is no way to combine full-text search with a PickList, at least not as far as I am aware.
The standard search works, by simply typing in a few letters, the search is for values in the first column, provided it is sorted.
Sounds to me that you need a first column in the view that is a category.
The column should have a formula something like:
@Left(StockCode; “0”)
This should give you everything to the left of the first “0”.

In addition to Kenneth’s suggestion, you can add more then one value in the first column to search on, it doesn’t have to be one field, it can be serveral or any combo.
As an exmaple, say you are looking for a person, you can let the user do a quick search on the first name or the last name. You can even take it a step further and add dept to the name, or any other variable. If you are returning the second column value it doesn’t matter how the search was done on.
Hope that makes sense, if not let me know.
Subject: RE: @Picklist Search functionality
Hi Kelly
Thanks for the response but I dont think I am going to be able to do what I want using a Picklist, the simple search does not give me the functionality I am looking for. My user is requesting that when a button is clicked a pop up dialog with all items is displayed. On this box there will be a text box and a search button which will allow the user to type in what they want, it will then search through the description field of the view and return all instances of the word that was searched for.
The Picklist just does not allow this.
Again Thanks for the help.
