Perpetual compacting conundrum

I recently upgraded our Administration server to Domino R6.01 from R5.08

Ever since then Domino is contantly sweeping through the mailboxes attempting to compact them. As most of the databases don’t require compacting, they just drop off the task list almost immediately with a 0% recovered message.

However, the larger mailboxes which appear to need compacting take an age to run through the task only to drop off with a 0% recovered message.

The catch is, as they have taken so long to compact, the new compact sweep has already started again and off we go on the vicious circle.

I have done the offline Updall, Fixup and compacting tasks, the ODS is V43 but to no avail.

I also tried to create new replicas of the databases, which seems to work for a while, but eventually they get sucked back into the process, I assume after people have started deleting documents.

If I create replicas on another (R5) server, the databases sit there quite happily and don’t start compacting like some mad thing… So the questions are…

Why is it doing this and why only on mailboxes?

How can I stop it doing this?

And why even though it is compacting a database which appears to need it, it still doesn’t free up any space, yet it does if you set off a manual compact?

Oh yeah, and when will I get a good nights sleep without thinking about all the above? :o)

As you can imagine this is getting very tiresome and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Bryn.

We are having the same problem. I notice in our log that something is kicking off our Program document that runs the compact task. This program document is set to only run on Saturdays at 1:00 AM. But here is the entry in our log:04/25/2003 12:54:48 PM Running Program document for ‘Compact mail\ -B -D’

Very srtange. It’s a feature!!

As a suggestion (and only a suggestion) check that you don’t have anything in the Repeat Interval field of the Program document.

One other idea for checking what the system may think it’s doing is (from the help):

To view all tasks scheduled to run on a server, use the Show Schedule command.

If you can find out what the server thinks it should be running and when, you may have a better idea of what’s happening.

Do you have a File Monitor set up to look at Unused Space in your databases? This may be triggering your sporadic compact tasks. You may want to eliminate this (if it’s present) and set up a program document to COMPACT your databases at a time of your choosing.

Not as far as I’m aware or I can tell.I have not added anything since upgrading the Domino software, so anything that is running now would have been there previously (in the Address Book?), unless R6.01 has added something itself of course.

At first I thought it was just trying to upgrade the ODS or something as it started compacting immediately after I fired Domino up for the first time, but it just keeps on going and going… And with over 800 mailboxes and about 10 compact tasks running concurently, it slows the server down somewhat too!!

AAARGH!!
