Performance of this forum - from bad to worse

This forum has always had horrific performance. Ridiculously long load times for pages, etc. But now it’s far worse.

What’s up with not even being able to move my cursor to the search box or click a link until the browser is done loading something from “stats.surfaid.ihost.com”? At least that’s what’s in my status bar while my browser sits paralyzed. I mean come on, if you’re gonna have a third party do web stats for you, at least be sure they have the bandwidth to handle it for Christ sake!

I get the same issues whether running IE or FF. I only have two addons for FF, those being Firebug (which is disabled) and Adblock Plus.

This forum has gone from incredibly annoying to nearly unusable.

Have you tried accessing the forum from different networks? I have always gotten reasonable load times, whether from the corporate network, or via Comcast or even back to DSL at 1.5 mps some years ago. Loading a document from the forum, or the initial view, I find my access times are comparable with other websites. If you open a doc in a new tab, you SHOULD be seeing the page loading in about the time it takes to click on the new tab and change the focus (tested this using Comcast at 6 mps).

Try doing network tests (start with ping and tracert on the address www-10.lotus.com). I did find that I went through 25 hops on my tracert, the first 12 of which are on Comcast’s networks. Start with the simple tests, and see if you can narrow down where the bottleneck is coming… if it’s in your network or somewhre else… or if it is perhaps something to do with the way your proxy server is configured, etc. As always when troubleshooting network related issues (even if it’s not your network that you suspect is causing the problem), start with the pc and work your way out, testing every component that you can get access to.

Short version… load times are right where I expect them to be and I am experiencing no significant lag times doing anything on the forum site.

I appreciate the advice, but my problem isn’t with a slow connection. It’s with some sort of background processing/tracking that’s going on. If I disable Javascript, the pages load instantly. but of course the forum is completely non-functional then.

It seems to be mostly a problem on the view pages, not when opening individual posts.

As I said, my browser appears to be getting stuck loading something from “stats.surfaid.ihost.com”, because that’s what’s in the status bar when my browser (both IE and FF) freeze up. It’s similar to what you get with some web pages that hold back the contents of a page until all the ads load (something I’m at a loss to understand how they do it). My guess at this point is that my company is inadvertently blocking the I.P address of this ihost.com domain, which causes my browser to become paralyzed until it times out.

Can anybody confirm or deny that what I described is what the page is actually doing?

This line at the bottom of the pages seems to be the culprit:

The js file loads a bunch of web beacons and other assorted crap. I’ve tried manually adding ihost.com and coremetrics.com to FF’s image exclude list, but it now it gets stuck on “Read ibm.com”.

I know enough about Javascript to be dangerous, but this stuff absolutely mystifies me. And pisses me off.
