Partitioned server using a single NIC with multiple IP's assigned

Partitioned server using a single NIC with multiple IP’s assigned

I’m running a partitioned server on a single NIC. OP: Win2003

It runs two instances of Domino Version 6.5.5. FP2 int.

I’ve specified two IPs on the NIC.

Now I want to bind each server and all its services exclusively to one of the IPs.

I’ve edited Notes.INI to bind specific IPs but doesn’t seem to be working for me.

When I try to replicate witin a specific Domino I get error messages

23.01.2007 16:25:52 Unable to replicate with server XXXX30: Connection denied. The server you connected to has a different name from the one requested.

23.01.2007 16:25:52 Database Replicator shutdown

a trace to the destinated IP shows:

trace 10.50.212.82

23.01.2007 16:27:31 Remote console command issued by XXX: trace 10.50.212.82

23.01.2007 16:27:31 Network: Connected to server XX60/VVV/FFF

the trace give me the name of the second partition server but not for the desired domino server

I put in notes.ini the lines that follow:

TCPIP_Customer=TCP,0,15,0,45088,

TCPIP_Admin=TCP,0,15,0,45088,

TCPIP_CL_30_31=TCP,0,15,0,45088,

TCPIP_Customer_TcpipAddress=0,10.50.233.18:1352

TCPIP_Admin_TcpipAddress=0,10.50.234.18:1352

TCPIP_CL_30_31_TcpipAdress=0,10.50.212.82:1352

Ports=TCPIP_Customer,TCPIP_Admin,TCPIP_CL_30_31

When i quit one of the domino server , then i can replicate or trace the desired server without problems.

Could anyone tell me how can i bind multiple IP’s with single NIC ?

The notes.ini lines don’t cascade down like that. Each partition only needs the information for its own IP address.

In Admin’s notes.ini you’d have:

TCPIP_TcpIpAddress=0,10.50.234.18:1352

TCPIP=TCP,0,15,0,45088

Ports=TCP

Customer’s notes.ini would have:

TCPIP_TcpIpAddress=0,10.50.233.18:1352

TCPIP=TCP,0,15,0,45088

Ports=TCP

CL_30_31’s notes.ini would have:

TCPIP_TcpIpAddress=0,10.50.212.82:1352

TCPIP=TCP,0,15,0,45088

Ports=TCP

If you change that var in notes.ini like you have in your message, the server’s just going to ignore it. TCPIP_TcpIpAddress is what binds the Domino server to a particular IP address.

I don’t know if these servers are new or if they were consolidated or not…but one thing you’ll also want to look out for is making sure that http is bound to the correct address in the server (or Internet Site) doc as well.

Thank you for the answer.

but you have me miss understood.

I have on each partition server three (3) Network cards therefore i have assigned three ports on each server.

the problem is, that unter OP Windows 2003 you can´t bind the NICs like unter OS SUN or linux or AIX.

for sun systems you can bind it as follow

To enable an IP address in Sun Solaris

  1. Add one entry in the local host names /etc/hosts file for each server partition. The entry for the partition that uses the computer host name should already exist.

  2. For each partition, create a file named:

/etc/hostname.device:n

where device is the device name of the NIC, and n is a number that increments for each file name. The /etc/hostname.hme0 file should already exist and contain the computer host name.

For example, if /etc/hostname.hme0 contains the name Server1, create:

/etc/hostname.hme0:1

which contains the name Server2. and

/etc/hostname.hme0:2

which contains the name Server3.

  1. Create the alias for each IP address that goes to the NIC which is hme0. At the console, enter:

/sbin/ifconfig hme0 plumb

/sbin/ifconfig hme0:n IP_address

where n is the number you created in Step 2 for each file name, and IP_address is the address assigned to the corresponding server in Step 1. For example:

/sbin/ifconfig hme0 plumb

/sbin/ifconfig hme0:1 111.123.11.96

/sbin/ifconfig hme0:2 111.123.11.22

but on Windows 2003 i did not found the information to assing separate IP addresses on a system with a single NIC (e.g. like SUN OP)

the trouble is (to my mind) the operating system.

We had this same problem when swapping a partitioned server out to new hardware. The problem was that BOTH server ini files stated PARTITION=1. So, when the second server was started, the error was “The server you connected to has a different name from the one requested.”

Updating the server2 ini file to PARTITION=2 corrected the problem.

I have a very similar set up and it works fine. It has been a long time since I set it up so I’m a little rusty. I know that I did the bind to IP in the server Doc, but I seem to remember doing something in the Notes.ini as well.
