Outlook Express to Lotus notes

Hi

I urgently need help on the foll. problem:

I want to use Lotus Notes as my mailserver for a big network. There is already a mailserver using Outlook Express in the network.

My requirement: I install Lotus as the main server which will configure the domain as abc.com (where abc is my organisation name), so that I am able to create email ids for all users like pia@abc.com

BUT, I want to use Outlook Express only, at all my client(user) machines.

Now, Q1: Firstly how exactly can I go about the whole procedure(if you could plz be very explicit as I ve only worked on development part of Lotus Domino and not administration)

Q2:will I need to install Lotus Client on all user systems?

Q3: Can I import already existing mailing system configurations onto my Lotus Server (which I ll be configuring)

Basically, long and short of it is that I want to switch my current mailserver (which is configured onto Outlook Express) and want to make it a lotus mail Server. How can I do it in minimum effort so that my network is not effected much.

Plz could anyone help me asap on the problem.

Thank you.

p.s: The O.S being used currently is Red hat Linux

Subject: Outlook Express to Lotus notes

Pia,

there is lots of documentation around on how to set up a Domino Server, as there are lots of options to choose from when installing a Domino Server. Unluckily, I can’t write an online course here, it would take ages to do that …

Q2: no. With respect to clients, you have 2 different options to choose from:

a) You could configure a Domino Server as a POP3 Server, and then have Outlook Clients access Domino via POP3 - they’d download their mails, and work with them offline. At the Outlook client, you will need to configure “Accounts” for both the POP3 client to receive mails as for SMTP for specifying an outgoing mail server for mails sent by your Outlook clients.

b) you could use DAMO (Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook), which allows users to access their Notes-based mailfiles directly from their Outlook client.

For more information on DAMO, including links to download the product, see this:

Hope this gives you sort of a jumpstart,

Stephan

Subject: DAMO, etc.

DAMO is for Outlook, not Outlook Express.

Pia should set up her Domino server for POP3. For information, she should see Administrator Help under Index > Mail > The POP3 Service.

For migration questions, she should also check Administrator Help under Index > Mail and Directory Migration. Data from Outlook Express can be migrated.

Subject: RE: DAMO, etc.

Hey guys

Thanx for the responses.

DAMO out of ques I guess as I checked the link Stephen posted and Lawrence was right that it is for Microsoft Outlook where as my requirement is for Outlook Express.

I still have to go through Administrator help and by tht I hope you mean Domino Administrator help?? (wasnt too sure so asked… ;-)))

But before that Tell me

Q1: if I configure my Domino Server for POP3, in that case will I still need the existing Outlook Express mailserver? wht about SMTP?

Q2: exactly why should I use POP3 instead of SMTP?

Q3: will I have to configure all users one-by-one and make mailfiles

(nsf’s) for each one of them?

'Coz I need to make the transition from Outlook Express mailserver to Lotus mailserver within max. of half a day as we cant keep the users mail clogged more than tht.

And I can use Windows as my O.s instead of Linux now (I wasnt too comfortable with tht anyways)… so thtz a change!

Any more suggestions??

Thanx a lot.

Subject: Try bringing a consultant

Pia, seems like you have a tight deadline, given that this is your first experience with Domino, you may consider bringing a Domino admin centric consultant to help get you jump started. While (in my opinion) is straight forward to get going, you really don’t want to do it wrong the first time. Re-creating certificates and reseting passwords is an irritant to end users.

Just my 2 cents.
