Out of Office - Agent or Service

I have just upgraded one side of a test cluster from 7.0.1 to 8.5 (the other member will stay on 7.0.1 for testing as this is what the prod servers are)

I have so far placed a couple of mail files ONLY on the 8.5 server, question is as the mail files are only on the 8.5 side of the cluster can the OOO type be set to ‘Service’ rather than ‘Agent’, which is advised for a cluster comprising of 8 and pre 8 servers.

Thank you.

Subject: Mixed cluster environment

So you will have no mail delivered to R7.0.1 server, right? In that case this should be no problem (i.e. OOO service will not miss responding to any mail)

Let me explain how this works so you understand exactly what the issue is in the mixed cluster (8.0+ and pre 8.0).

OOO service works at the point of mail delivery on 8.0+ servers. When failover occurs OOO service functionality continues to work on whatever server the router is delivering mail to.

If one of the mail servers in the cluster is pre-8.0 and failover occurs to that server, the mail messages are delivered but since pre 8.0 servers do not have OOO service built-in the OOO notification will not mailed out.

So in your mixed environment, if you have mail delivered only to R8.5 then there will be no missing notifications.

Subject: I believe the answer is

If there are no mail files in both the 8.5 side of the cluster and the pre-8.0 side of the cluster it would be safe to turn on the service on the 8.5 side of things… Make sure you go to Domino 8.5 FP1 ASAP since it was just released. After you feel comfortable with things upgrade the whole cluster to 8.5 FP1 as this is the recommended best practice of course…
