OSX - Can't open Word/Execl attachments directly

When I get a Word or Excel attachment I can no longer just use “Open” from the double-click dialog. It just opens Word/Excel with an empty document. Even using save doesn’t help. The documents that get saved don’t open with a double-click in Finder either, I have to use “Open” from inside Word or Excel to open these files.

I have OS X 10.5.3, and Office 2008 with the latest updates applied.

Subject: RE: Can’t open…

I use Office 2004 for Macintosh and do not have this problem. In the private beta there were some reports of problems with Office 2008. I wonder if your experience could be related.

Subject: Had it working in old beta

I had it working to some degree in the old beta, but this one won’t play at all.

Subject: Word/Excel Attachments

Ian, are you using Office 2008 SP1?. At SP1 Microsoft has deprecated older Word and Excel file types. Notes, in common with many email clients on Mac, uses the OSX Internet Config database to look up, for a particular file extension, what file type to give the attachment. This results, for Word at least, in a file type of WDBN which Word 12.1 refuses to open (as Microsoft seem to have declared this a security vulnerability). There is a freeware utility on Version Tracker that enables you to change the Internet Config parameters, as this is no longer possible with a native OSX function. Office 2004 does not have this problem as it still happily opens Word files with a WDBN file type. I have posted details on all of this in the forum at the end of May, and this covers Excel and Powerpoint file types also. If you cannot find that post then post back and I will repost here.

Subject: Found your post and it works, now will Notes get fixed to not need it?

Richard, I found your post at http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd85forum.nsf/5f27803bba85d8e285256bf10054620d/1e385797e6d64d948525745f00258248?OpenDocument and followed the instructions. The application I used was the MisFox preference pane as you suggested, and it works fine. Thanks for the help.

Will Lotus be fixing Notes to use the newer codes?
