Subject: Order of execution of formula language

For most commands @Command causes them to execute where they are placed in the order of the code and @PostedCommand forces the command to be executed last regardless of where it is in the code.

Unfortunately @command([ToolsRunMacro]…) and @command([FileCloseWindow]) are classed as non-synchronous. Regardless of whether you gave them @command or @postedcommand they’d get executed at the end of the other “synchronous” code!

In R6 @command([CloseWindow]) and @command([RunAgent]) were added as synchronous versions of these commands!

Consider an example where you wish to close the current document and open a new database. You would logically code:

@command([FileCloseWindow])

@command([FileOpenDatabase]…)

However the FileCloseWindow would execute after the FileOpenDatabase and close the window you’d just opened!

With the new functions you can specify:

@command([CloseWindow])

@command([FileOpenDatabase]…)

And the current window will close then the new database will open - hurrah.

TBH you used to be able to work round most of the non-synchronous problems by making everything else you wanted to execute as an @PostedCommand, but you’d hit a road block if you wanted to closewindows, run agents and set fields in the same button in a specific order.
