Old records returning to database?

We have a database based on the Domino Directory template. We’ve been using the database with no problems for several years. It is listed in the directory assistance for user name type ahead (these are external addresses).

Recently, old contacts have been reappearing in the database. The users delete the contacts, then mysteriously (to us anyway) they are back. Creation dates with old dates, last modified years ago.

Not replicated to any other servers. Disabled replication on the database.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Subject: sounds like someone hooked up a very old replica and started replicating it again.

When you delete a document, a deletion stub hangs around for a while – 120 days maybe? Depending on your setting for number of days to remove unmodified docs. After that, the deletion stubs are gone and if you replicate with an old replica that never heard about the deletions, they will look like new documents. Check the replication history and see what server might be replicating that you didn’t expect. Check the user history and see who wrote a bunch of documents.

Thanks for the response Andre. (I work with Kathy)

Replication has been disabled on this database, there are no other replicas anywhere, and the replication history is empty, except for one entry from when we replicated it back from a copy a couple years ago.

Any other thoughts?

Subject: Clues in User Activity?

Like Andre, I would have guessed someone replicated after much time has past. That bites us all the time. I’ve started using the ACL settings to prevent replication for some of our databases.

Can you determine approximately when the old docs were reintroduced? Maybe the “last modified (in this file)” will help. If so, look at the Database Properties User Activity to see who was writing when it happened.

Good luck.

Subject: Re: deselecting “Replicate or copy documents”

I wrote, “I’ve started using the ACL settings to prevent replication for some of our databases.”.

I’d like to retract that statement. I forgot that when you deselect “Replicate or copy documents” in the ACL, it causes all sorts of problems, such as users cannot even print or copy/paste.

Subject: Maybe a second replica of the same database on the server with different settings?
