Old mail showing up. A good one if I may say so

Hi all

I did some search and even had a similar problem but in this case, I cannot pinpoint it.

About a month ago, I moved User1 from server 11 (clustered to server 12). to server X1 (Clustered with X2). After the move to the new cluster, I deleted the old databases (on both 11 and 12).

This Saturday, User1 received 3400 messages dating back to 2005!

Replication log say those messages were dumped from the old server 11 on Saturday at 12:56pm.

I checked server 11 and it confirmed it sent those 3400 messages to User1 on the new server.

Problem is that there is no mailfile for user1 on that server (or it’s cluster)…

I checked the logs both on system and Domino and I cannot find any other trace of this transaction.

It looks like this DB was retrieved from back up and deleted (only after doing all the damage…) But then again, I cannot find anything at all on any logs. Nothing in the access log, nothing in the system logs

Anyone can think of anywhere else I can check?

By the way, the server logs are set to Verbose .

Thanks

Jacques

does the user have a local replica that may have pushed the old docs back to the server?

Hi

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I did check that and no, there is no local copies, replicas or anything else.

I also did a search through all the servers (the ones I know exist) and nothing there as well.

funny you should mention this happening though cuz I had a user last week with the same issue, lots of old mail came back and no local replica and no other replicas anywhere. I just did a restore from the previous day’s backup.

At this point, I have 3 users who reported this problem. 2 Friday and one Saturday (plus some that have not reported the problem yet). In all cases, I cannot find anything.

I have asked my network tech for a complete list of computers and servers on the network and their software list… Not sure when I will get it.

I know I had a similar problem this summer at another client where some people received upward of 20000 old messages after we modified their access list and moved the users to another server. In this case, it turned out they originally had a cluster replica that never took deletion stubs (but took a replica of all the messages). After the move, the clustered DB woke up and sent the current one all the old messages again. I ended up deleting all of the cluster before it made more mess.

In the present case, I have done all the cluster and other known server check.

It is almost like someone turned on one old server and turned it off after the damage was done…

Maybe it is a good incentive to get a full network packet sniffer…

Thanks for the file Jean Yves…

No, I do not have any back-up servers or anything else.

It almost looks like someone turned on one very old server. It could be anywhere

There is even a few that have messed up templates… (Inbox is OK and the New memo form is R4…)

I guess I will have to start searching further than my LAN and check the WAN… I wonder if I have an old machine somewhere with Domino on it… Network guys are on it…

But I am open to any other suggestions…
