As posted in the Private Beta forum many will know that MS Office 2008 SP1 deprecated several well used file types meaning that they cannot be opened with a double click from Finder and neither will they open from within Notes by double clicking the attachment and selecting Open. Thanks to user Osakans on the Mactopia Word forum, there is a workaround.
I quote: ‘It turns out that Lotus Notes uses Internet Config (a piece of public domain code that’s incorporated into OS X) to apply file type and creator codes to files that don’t originate on the Mac. At least on my computer, Internet Config maps the .doc extension to file type WDBN and creator MSWD.’
It also turns out that fortunately, Alexander Clauss has written a utility to change the mappings within Internet Config and this is available at http://mac.clauss-net.de/misfox/
If you download this utility it installs a preference pane in System Preferences to enable you to change these mappings. When you load the pane, find the .doc, .ppt and .xls mappings, double click each of them in turn and change the mappings as follows:
Change .doc to Creator MSWD and Type W8BN
Change .xls to Creator XCEL and Type XLS8
Change .ppt to Creator PPT3 and Type SLD8
You’ll probably find the creator codes are already set to the above but the type codes will be the deprecated codes. After changing and saving these, reload Notes and you should be able to double click and then open an attachment.
