Odd DAMO installation

I installed DAMO 6.5.5 w/ Outlook 2003 with no problems. However, there are few components lacking:

  • Tools > Options: there should be a tab for Notes options in there for out of office, replication, etc. It’s not there.

  • In Help, there is no option for Domino help, just the standard Outlook help.

I uninstalled/reinstalled both DAMO and Outlook, and I’m still getting the “neutered” version without the DAMO options in Outlook.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Catherine

Nothing like wading through hundreds of tech notes to find the answer! Found and fixed - thanks

Catherine I really wish luck to everyone of you who have installed DAMO and think its fine and dandy. Apparently you haven’t been taking a look to the way the data is being stored in the NSF. As soon as you have people complaining about the way their mail file is disorganized, or has things missing, I wish you luck. DAMO is an alternative only if your users will never need to use DWA. At our shop unfortunately they turned their DAMO frustrations against Domino 7.0.1 and DAMO 7.0

They chose MSxchange. I don’t blame them because I opened up about 6 PMR with Lotus Support and we could sort of remedy the problems but never got to the bottom of why these things were happening: message body’s blank (the issue is talked about in the RSS feeds, i know) messages in the wrong folders… messages missing, unread marks not being synched and so on… the list is an absurd to call this product Gold version. To me, it is still a beta.

DAMO is the worst thing I’ve ever used by Lotus. I almost got fired today.

To me it’s sad that end users don’t see the value of using a tool like quickplace or a portal and have their webmail link… and they’d rather use the stupid MS product. It’s amazing how far stupidity can go as to underlook Lotus Domino for not being able to use Outlook as The Client for PIM in Domino. I’ve been working with Domino now 5 years and this has been the most shameful experience in my life. Again, If you are offering DAMO and DWA be very careful. As time goes by, you will notice quirky differences between the PST and the NSF. I spent more than month and a half debugging this product just to almost end up getting fired. Do not promise your end users that they can actually use either one of the two clients for this is totally impossible with DAMO. You can test it and it’ll work for you… wait until you roll it to the end users… thats my say on DAMO 7.0

Hi Robert,

The whole purpose of DAMO is to allow the Domino server to be the backend mail server with minimum inconvenience to users used to using Outlook. Further, IT Administrators have enough to do during the transition to Domino without having the further burden of training their users on the Notes client.

The whole DAMO team, Managers, Developers and QE all work very hard at providing a good product. We are responsive at many different levels. Issues come to us from Support, Sales, and the forums. We take them all very seriously and work hard at making your experience with DAMO a good experience. There are customer all over the world that are using DAMO successfully.

Again, we are sorry that ended up with a bad experience.

Mike

If to use DAMO successfully means to: simply receive an email in the inbox and sometimes replicate changes (read-unread marks, folders) in the PST back to the NSF without ever giving the user access to their mail file via http to complaint about differences, to have ideal won’t crash Outlook by opening and closing the client(try opening and closing Outlook with DAMO three times…), then I would agree with “success” in the way that you say that many customers all over the world use DAMO. I just fell into the notion that I could seamlessly access my email via DWA or DAMO after being able to do just that with the notes client in all previous versions and reading all this… (quoting)

"Although the process of replicating data between the Domino mail file and Outlook PST file sounds complex, it happens quickly, so you never sees a drop in performance. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make this magic happen, but it’s virtually invisible to the user.

The DAMO client enables you to use your mail client of choice

From the mail client perspective, the user experience of Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook is virtually identical to that of Microsoft Outlook. Essentially, the client is the same; it’s just the supporting data storage that differs. In addition, Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook lets users run the Outlook or Notes client over the same data. This means you can switch between either client, sending and receiving messages and creating calendar entries while viewing the same data in a different perspective. This offers a solution for users who may have Microsoft Outlook on their computers at work and Lotus Notes on their laptops, but need to work with the same data.

The ability to run either DAMO or Lotus Notes over the same Domino mail file also offers a solution for mixed-client environments in which some users in an organization run Lotus Notes, while others run Microsoft Outlook. This may be the case when companies merge, for example, and combine their information services groups. From a management and IT perspective, it’s preferable to use the Domino server throughout the organization, but users often prefer to continue running the same client they’re accustomed to using, regardless of the back-end data storage. The DAMO client lets Outlook users in the organization continue using their client of choice, while Notes users can continue to use the same client. The Domino data storage is invisible to both groups of users."

I didn’t just have a headache with DAMO, I also did with nupgrade.exe (option 3). I had to end up using DAMO to migrate the data. You can follow step by step and you will somewhere along the line get a crash on the way.

And Mike All Over the world they Just use Outlook… after this last experience I am completely convinced.

Thank you for being polite and making me feel all rude and insensitive. The real bottom line is that I did see with Lotus Support how far from a finished product DAMO is to this day. Too bad for me that I didn’t see this earlier.

And Mike maybe before calling a product GOLD try testing it with PST’s full with all kinds of data (like endless repetitive calendar entries… different types of appointments, … etc) and why the heck is there an “Other Messages” folder anyway???

I must FULLY agree with Robert. We are in the exact same situation where the damo client works well in IT, but as soon as we rolled it out, we started seeing very strange things. It is now in a situation where we are practically forced into an Exchange environment Just to keep those outlook users happy.

Since we are in the fase of an IT merger, we are inheriting an Exchange Environment. Because of this, we have to make a choice as preferred mailserver. Due to the damo problems, the favor will probably go to Exchange. (those 700 mail users on exchange have max 1 problem a month. Our damo users have tons of problems a day).

It’s a pitty that IBM releases a non working solution and dare to ask money for it!!

In my opinion, IBM is just 1 year to late with their oh so promissing hannover client…
