Crash that occurred during a quit. I had been using Notes for a while, so I can’t tell what precipitated the crash. This is, I think, the first I have had with Beta 1.
Just a general comment about Notes stability. I have found this beta to be stable, BUT, I am feeling (not confirmed) that the longer I use it, the more unstable it becomes. Examples: If I keep Notes open all day long, letting my MBP sleep occasionally in a normal work envirnoment, it is MUCH less stable than using it for an hour and quitting. Finally, Notes behavior seems to change over days of use. It FEELS like the code is auto-updating, though I don’t know that this occurs. It could just be cache impact, but it feels like I get different results (slightly and not reproducible) today than I did a few days after it was installed.
NSD for this crash is attached.
Subject: NSD during quit and instability
I’m seeing the same behaviors. Now, every time I launch Notes client, I get a message saying “NDS is collecting crash information, please wait…” Notes starts, but crashes in less than a minute. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, run old versions, nothing fixes this and now Notes 8 beta 1 is completely unusable on my machine. I’m going to have to go back to a previous version. I never had any crashes with the previous beta release. This version is definitely less reliable and seemed to get worse everyday until getting to its current unusable state.
Subject: Same problem… perhaps some insight
I’ve been having similar problems for weeks now. This beta has been truly frustrating.
What I have found, however is that the NSD crashes seem to be related to rendering of email with some embedded graphics. Not all HTML email crashes my system… but some with embedded/attached graphics do.
What I have had to do is delete those emails from my Blackberry as it is impossible to do so in the Notes client without crashing Notes.
Further complicating this issue is the fact that I can’t quit Notes. I could for a while, but at some point I can no longer quit Notes… I always have to Force quit. This presents the problem that I can never fully save preference changes and I always end up with saved workspace tabs from months ago (now) and my email file pointing to an email from that same time period.
Thankfully, that email is not one of the embedded image emails that crashes my system. As a result, I can restart and spend the minutes it takes to close out old tabs and get my workspace to what I want it to be now.
In your case Mike, you may be stuck on that email that crashes Notes… so you are in an endless cycle.
I have no idea how to fix any of this… but perhaps this insight helps Chris or someone else on the team to resolve this matter.

Subject: Not /that/ bad
Oh it isn’t that bad for me.
Perhaps you have some cleanup you might try -
Delete Java caches
use the Uninstall utility
Delete your Notes Preferences file
I would guess that others might have a specific list of cleanups.
Subject: Fixing crash
Thanks for the hints. I’m new to using Notes on the Mac so would you please give me a little more info?
-
How do I clear the Java caches?
-
Where do I get the Uninstaller?
-
Where is the Notes Preference file?
Thanks.
Subject: Please attach NSD & crash logs…
The latest NSD log can be found in ~/Library/Application Support/Lotus Notes Data/IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT (look for nsd*.log). The latest Crash Reporter log will be in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter (look for Notes*.crash if you’re using Basic, eclipse*.crash if you’re using Standard). Please include both logs since they contain different information.
You can clear your eclipse workspace by deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Lotus Notes Data/Expeditor/.metadata. (You’ll have to do this in Terminal because the folder is invisible in the Finder.) Or delete the entire Expeditor folder.
To start over from scratch, remove the entire Lotus Notes Data folder and Notes Preferences (which is in ~/Library/Preferences).
No need to uninstall/re-install to reinitialize your Notes data, but the Uninstaller application was included with the installer if you want to go that route.
Subject: Removing the .metdata file does not help
Chris - Since I was having similar problems I tried removing the .metdata file and it does not help. I did it correctly through the terminal and it did not resolve any issues I was having. Just thought I’d let you know.
