I upgraded my Notes client from 7.0.2 to 8.0.2 several months ago. Several weeks ago, a huge problem started popping up. My client is dreadfully slow opening e-mails. I’m talking about 50 seconds to open a 20 word text-only format message. While that is happening, not only can I not get into Notes, I really can’t get into anything else. Using Task Mgr, I see notes2w.exe is taking 95-99% of CPU usage. I ran compact -c on my database, deleted my cache.ndk, renamed desktop6.ndk. I also performed a check disk, upgraded java, ran a defrag and disk cleanup. This happens if the Notes client is the only application open or not and if I have just rebooted or not. My PC has 1GB memory & 80 GB hard drive with plenty of free space - same configuration as many others NOT having this problem. Any ideas on how to fix this? (We aren’t going to 8.5 until 8.51 is released.)

Your PC memory is below specs. As mentioned if you are using McAfee or other anti-virus check the settings for Notes folder.
HTML messages there is a notes.ini line that you can add to ‘Disable embedded browser for MIME emails’
Subject: IE8
Have you upgraded to IE8 at that time? This can cause a problem (not always though, bit strange). If so, you can ‘Disable embedded browser for MIME emails’ in preferences - or just go back to IE7
Subject: IE8 and notes2w
Dan,
Thanks for that note. Windows Automatic Updates installed IE8 yesterday, and today all external e-mails were taking forever to open and notes2w.exe in Task Manager spiked to over 50% cpu usage. A quick change in the prefences, and I’m back to normal. Thanks again.

We had similiar problem after upgrade to 8.5 with most of the machines. Then found out it was McAffee causing the issue. Adding folder exclusion for Notes and uninstalling Notes email scan in McAffee helped. Maybe not the most secure solution. Not sure it is the same problem. Another thing we have noticed was that clean install and creating settings (connections, locations) from scratch makes Notes way faster than upgrading from previous version or copying config files.

Subject: Question regarding a clean install of the Notes 8.02 client
When you did a “clean” install, what old files did you save (e.g., names.nsf, desktop6.ndk, etc.)? Also, when one uninstalls Notes, not all files get deleted. Would you suggest an uninstall AND a deletion of the Lotus folder and all subfolders or is just an uninstall good enough?
Thank you
Subject: notes slow
I would try to uninstall, clear up notes folder, do clean install and recreate manually all settings - copying desktop8.ndk only - just to check if that speeds it up. If anything else fails. That’s extreme of course as requires adding all connections, locations and etc. But good test. Usually we copy names.nsf, desktop and notes.ini (but notes.ini is full of old params as well - so can cause mess as well). Another thing is that you can clear up workspace folder in Data - there are loads of config files that are recreated when notes starts. Correct me guys if i’m talking rubbish about workspace folder. But as I said - in our case it was dodgy McAffee.
Good point about IE8 as well. Notes uses IE8 to render some windows - like sametime chat.
