Using 8.5 designer on a 8.02 server. A basic view is showing all squished on the web. What am I missing?

meaning that my columns are all bunched together. it’s not keeping the spacing as it’s showing on the notes client. The web view is sqeezing it together so that there is no white space.

No, that’s what they do. I think people mess around with the column heading text to guarantee a minimum width, or of course you could use JavaScript to find the table and adjust the cell widths. I’m not really up on the latest workarounds. With XPages, you have total control, so you might want to think about upgrading to use those.
