Notes on a high res screen

We’ve just acquired a number of laptops which have 1400x1050 resolution on a 14" screen. Needless to say, Notes default text is almost unreadably small. These screens don’t behave well at other than their default resolution so we need other means to make things larger.

I know I can change the Display_Font_Adjustment in the ini file - but many forms don’t adjust to font size changes, resulting in truncation.

What can we do for people with a high res screen who are unable to see tiny fonts?

  • Change the DPI setting under “Display Properties → Settings → Advanced”. For some reason this doesn’t produce that heinous scaling bollix like changing the resolution, and it doesn’t appear to impact performance.

CAVEAT:

  • Neither 'Net Exploiter nor Firefox correctly render input boxes on the web when this setting has been changed. Neither does CSS quite right, either. While the rendering errors are generally tolerable, they are present and relatively common. Be aware of this before applying the workaround above.

  • Display_Font_Adjustment is an excellent idea, but it needs to support fractional units to be truely effective, imho. The fix above is system-wide, though it only appears to apply to text and system tray icons, so all the text the entire system (plus system tray icons) will be scaled, but the window dressing (scroll bars, borders, menu icons etc) will not be scaled. I find that attractive, personally, because I hate large window dressing. (shrug) Your mileage may vary.

  • Hope this helps…

We already DO the DPI change - and find it works tolerably - EXCEPT for Notes.

I have not been able to find any useful info on creating a Notes Template that uses bigger fonts. In fact, amongst my biggest issues with Notes is its lack of tunability for the visually impaired (and being forced to use a high res screen impairs (almost) everyone!)

  • Odd. The DPI change affects Notes for me, and it’s the primary reason I employed it. Then again, I didn’t bump the size much … it’s 115%, so it’s possible that a larger increment will have different effects. This setting does appear to be fraught with many inconsistencies.- It’s also possible I changed the default font in my client, as I no longer have a textured workspace background, and that’s a known side-effect of changing the font from default. That would of course affect everything the client renders, changing things for me and me only. Perhaps the visually impaired persons could do that instead of trying to get the entire system to function at the least common denominator? Just tossing out ideas.

  • Sorry I couldn’t help you…
