As i know, windows 98 is compatible to run lotus notes client R6.5.1. But, why my pc always hang and got illegal operation error after upgrade my notes client from R4.6 to R6.5.1??? Is there any compatile issue to running notes 6.5.1 with windows 98???My PC is compaq…

Have you tried uninstalling notes and doing a fresh 651 install?
Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I prefer new installs to incremental upgrades, Must hark back to when I tried to upgrade win 3.1 to 95 …

I’m curious - why on earth are you running Windows 98 to begin with? Notes is a hog of a client, and Win9x memory allocation to applications is abysmal. Why not upgrade to Win 2k?

I am running Lotus Notes & Designer 6.5 on Windows 98 and had no problems installing nor do I have any problems now running it, other than having to limit my use of other apps at the same time due to memory constraints. I didn’t upgrade, I did a clean install.
And Mr. Chuck – My laptop came with Windows 98, so it’s free. Why would I give Micro$oft more of my $$$ to upgrade to Windows 2000 and beyond, especially when upgrading a Windows OS on a PC you’ve comfortably used and configured for years is like trying to install wall-to-wall carpeting in every room of a fully furnished home you’re living in – a major pain?!

So you would rather impose limits on how you work than to perform a very simple O/S upgrade? “Major pain” to upgrade to Win 2k? Who are you kidding? It’s an easy upgrade - there is better hardware compatibility built in to Win 2k. And never mind that Win 9x has absolutely no workstation security of any kind.
I don’t know of ANY I/T professional who would defend using Win 9x over Win 2k or XP as an acceptable platform for a development/administrative environment. Of course, it’s pretty obvious you just want to be argumentative and take a contrary approach (with a heaping helping of hatred for Microsoft thrown in).

I’m pretty much always a contrarian, but I use Windows 98 still. I use it for two reasons, neither of which may make sense to you. The first is that it is there, and anything I do to a working machine may make it not there when I need it. (I have various machines with various OS’s, but this is my regular development machine). The other reason is that i have to support people who may still be stuck on Windows 98, and I feel their pain better if I live in their environment.
I certainly don’t worry about the upgrade cost, as I have Microsoft’s ISV Empower program or whatever it is called and have CDs with every Windows OS just littering the office.

I’m curious - it seems to me that you’re arguing against ANY O/S upgrade? No matter how much better functioning it might be just because it possibly might not work? Personally, if an O/S upgrade looks like an improvement, I’ll grab it - I’d much rather be more productive (and with Win 2k over Win 98, I am) than continue to limp along with an O/S which is little more than DOS with a GUI face.
As for using it a test environment with a Notes (or whatever application) client, I certainly don’t have an argument against that (if that’s the actual user environment, of course) - it’s just that I tend not to develop on test workstations - I would prefer the most capable and robust design platform I can get my hands on.
I can’t count how many times my Win 95/98 development machines would crash while I was designing and testing Notes/Domino apps. 32-bit Windows was truly a godsend - finally I could keep a MS Word document open while I was testing agents (or whatever) and my system wouldn’t arbitrarily freeze. I can’t imagine ever going back to that pain.
