Notes client is locking up when the user tries to close it

This seems to be an XP issue.

When a user has their trash preferences set to “Prompt me during database close” and they have messages marked for deletion, if they try to close the client it will lock up Notes and bring the entire system to a crawl. The task manager indicates that the “Nlnotes.exe” is at 100% utilization.

If the user changes the preference to “Manually” they no longer have this issue.

The server is 6.5

The clients are 6.5 and 6.5.1

The Mail template is iNotes (R5)

The OS affected is XP (NT4 doesn’t have the problem)

I couldn’t find any other posts on this, but if I missed some, please point them out to me and accept my deepest apologies.

Thanks for reading,

Brent

Subject: Notes client is locking up when the user tries to close it

We are running server and client 6.5.3 and OS is XP. A user reported this issue in our environment. The user had the Welcome page set to include the Calendar view. I changed the Welcome page to Basics so it was not accessing the database and the problem stopped occurring. I think because of some conflict of Notes trying to close the database but because the Welcome page was set to the Calendar view the database was still open. Or it may be a problem with the bookmark.nsf as I cannot reproduce on my machine. -SKM

Subject: More info … and a work-around

I think I have the answer to this issue and it looks like a bug either in the Bookmark template or the client …

I’m running R6.5.4 servers and clients but do not have soft deletions on yet … we are seeing the exact same issue when closing the Notes client with mails marked for deletion and the deletion option set to ‘Prompt during close’ …

Well guess what, in certain circumstances the client does issue the prompt on close but you cannot see the popup message with buttons to select Yes or No … I know this because the PC beeps indicating a popup message and if you press the Alt key the popup will magically appear …

Now, this issue only occurs when you are using the R6.5 WorkPlace AND you go into your mailfile or other database then Exit the Notes client from there … the client closes each tab back to the WorkPlace then does not refresh the screen completely and it then waits for the hidden message to be answered (as I said press Alt and it will appear) … our users were killing the Notes client at that point which of course left processing running and so the client could not be started again without a restart (unless you manually killed the processes under Windows) …

If you use WorkPlace portal and exit Notes from there it works correctly and you see the prompt … or if you use the old Workspace it is fine, it only occurs when you are using the WorkPlace portal as your homepage and you exit from another database …

You can implement a work-around by either training your users to press the Alt key and answer the prompt (fat chance!) OR setup a Desktop policy to switch their deletion preference to ‘Always during database close’ (so all mails marked for deletion will be deleted) or ‘Manual’ (so it’s up to the user to refresh the view to remove them) …
