Our corporate CEO does not like Webmail, and wants to be able to dial in and check her email via the Notes client on her laptop. She connects into the network, puts in the password but gets and error message shortly afterwards saying that the server is not responding. I am thinking that perhaps the client needs to somehow be set up so she can connect this way. Does anyone know what settings/changes need to be made for internet client connectivity, or can anyone direct me to any documentation on this?
I guess the PC can’t resolve the server name to an IP address - just add a connection document on the client (under advanced in the address book) and see if that sorts it out.
Sign-in and password authentication is handled through the id file, and likely the reason that it takes a short period of time (instead of being instantaneous) to notify her that the server cannot be contacted is that there is a setting for how long and how many times Notes should try to connect.
Is she connected via:
dial-up directly to the Domino box
VPN
Direct WAN connection
The dial-up I can’t help ya on, haven’t worked with that, but if you’re using a vpn, try to have her ping the Domino server when connected. If she’s using a direct WAN connection to your company’s IP, make sure that the ports are open in the firewall.
If you connect your laptop via RAS or VPN check in your firewall that permit connectivity with port 1352. If you connect your laptop directly to the server vía dial up (modem) you need to create a new connection document and location document in the Lotus Notes Client.
I assume by dialing in you mean she’s connecting via RAS or VPN of some sort so she’s inside the companies firewall? That being said, verify that while dialed in, she can ping the server in question. Also, a simple test I do after pinging the server and it responds, is to telnet to the server on port 1352. It’s just important that it connects not that you can actually do anything else. From a command prompt: telnet servername 1352 If it fails:
C:>telnet acme1 1352
Connecting To acme1…Could not open connection to the host, on port 1352: Connect failed
If it was successful, you see a blank screen. Just close the window.
You may also want to talk to your network group to make sure they don’t have rules which are blocking connection to the Domino server. Good luck!
