Notes Client Configuration (notes.ini,names.nsf,desktop6.ndk on network drive)

Hello Everyone,

Just to check with all of you. I just upgrade Domino server 4.6.2 to 6.5. Now I also need to upgrade the notes client. Current setup for the notes client is that their notes.ini, names.nsf, desktop.dsk, user.id is on the network drive and then edit notes.ini accordingly together with the notes.exe shortcut to point to that notes.ini file. This was done on version 4.6.2 in order for them to share the PC for users. Now, I want to implement the same method for version 6.5 but i’m not able to do so. If I used Client installation for 1 person only or for myself installation, it always create desktop6.ndk or desktop66.ndk unending. If I used multi user for the installation of the client, I’m facing the same issue.

Is there a way to configure the notes client to share it among users like what we have done during version 4.6.2?

Kindly let me know. Thanks

I reckon you would be better off using “Roaming” check the details in the help files etc…

Hello to both of you.Regarding the profile, i may not be able to implement it because the customer is not yet on Windows AD environment. Still using the old Novell Server.

With regards to the desktop6=h:\Lotus\Notes\desktop6.ndk together with the names.nsf and id file and bookmark, i tried it out as suggested but im receiving a message that the “Database names.nsf has not been opened yet”. This popup message opened up everytime i opened notes client.

Just asking, will there be a problem if let say I point the Directory=H:\Lotus\Notes\ which means that the data is pointing to the H: drive. In this manner it works but I just dont know whether there is an implication or problem with that setting.

We have always run from a network drive. Here is what i did when going to 6.5.1. I upgraded the client and then went into the Notes.ini file and added/changed 2 lines.

[Notes]

KitType=1

Directory=C:\Lotus\Notes\Data

“Names=h:\Lotus\names.nsf”

“Desktop6=h:\Lotus\desktop6.ndk”

InstallType=2

We also have their user ids out on their h: drives along with bookmarks.nsf. After upgrading the clinet i renamed their desktop5.dsk to desktop6.ndk that way they did not loose any desktop settings for Lotus Notes.

So with all those files out on their h:drive i start the program and make sure it knows to look for the id file on the h:drive. That way if another Lotus user logs onto this machine it will see that the last id used does not match and will ask you to select one and it will alreay have it pulled up so all they have to do is select their id and click open and then they will be prompted for their password and can go on with no problems. I hope i explained this well enough.
