Notes Client - Attachments download twice across wire?

Here’s what I’m seeing Notes client 6.5.4 talking to a 6.5.4 server.

Client opens their email - inbox

client opens a message that has an attachment

The entire attachment gets downloaded when they open the message (if memory serves me correctly this is a feature change from 5.x).

Then if they attempt to open the attachment while still in the message - the attachment gets downloaded yet another time.

Has anyone else noticed this?

It really becomes visible in the client is remote from the server (slower pipe).

Thanks

I’ll go you one better - you right-click in a view on a document that has an attachment and choose Document Properties and it seems to load the entire attachment into memory, before you have even opened the document!

This behavior has been happening for a long time, but I don’t think it did in R5.

Cheers,

Beth

Check that they are not running a Virus Scanner that is set to scan attachments when reading mail - they would ask the sever to give them the document (with is scanned, then discarded) regardless of whether the user opens the attachments. (And if they do, the server has to send a second copy.)

In our case it happens even on non-mail databases, so I don’t think it’s a virus scan.

Check !

The scanners don’t know what’s a mail database or not, nor do they care - a virus is a virus wherever it’s attached… They check every document that’s opened in every database.

Specifically at our company, we use Symantec, which has this Notes Auto-Protect option. If that’s turned on, we’d see exactly the symptoms you describe.

Gee! Who’d a thought?

But if we disable Symantec from protecting Notes databases, aren’t we then vulnerable to e-mail viruses?

We HAVE seen cases where a virus has gotten past our server anti-virus check, only to be caught by the client software. This is rare, but has happened more than once.

Thanks,

Beth

Yes, you might be more vulnerable, and so it’s a decision you need to make. However, leaving it on means that the attachment is downloaded and scanned every time someone looks at the document … it’s very inefficient.
