Notes Client 6.5.2 drops from network, needs reboot

Hello All I have a problem with a several users that appear to drop from the network at random. They need to reboot and it works fine again. Can anyone give me a clue on what I can do to start fixing this problem.

Details

The notes DB is on a Network drive. It seems that if there is an interruption in the network (as in a busy network timing out) the Notes client looses connection. We receive a message that says “The specified network name is no longer available”. After this there seems to be no choice but to reboot. Does anyone have a solution to this so that we can get the client to reconnect automatically?

Thanks in advance

Jack

Did you try increasing the connection time out in user preferences (File → Preferences → user preferences → Ports → TCPIP options) ?

Possibly a silly suggestion but have you checked if there is power saving enabled on the network cards - if there is then the connection will be lost when the card is powered off?

Jack, some things to look at.

Is your DNS working correctly?

If you do the following:

ping host.domain.com -t

Do you get continuing replies or do you get intermittent replies?

If you look at your network devices (Managed Switches/Router) do you see any errors on the port(s)?

Shawn. Thanks for your response. It seems like DNS is working fine. When I ping the host that has the shared network (Shared Server) drive I get a continous response with no breaks and a 1 ms time out.

Reply from 10.0.15.203: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=126

We suspected one of the switches and changed the port so the Shared Server goes directly into a core switch (Cisco 5509). We have checked the traffic on this switch and it seems normal.

The difficulty is that this happens at random and I have not received information from the users on the exact time etc. I’m still working on collecting these details. Its not all users that get dropped of. Of the 1200 or so users we have only about 15 are experiencing this. (Trouble is some of these 15 are VIP’s)

Any further advise is appreciated.

Jack, since it seems like you have the Domino data directory on a mapped drive (you might consider a SAN in the 07 budget for this)The key is in the Domino server and it’s response time to that Network Share Host. Do you see any errors in the logs of either boxes? If you try to browse the mapped drive does it work fine? Is the mapped drive established under a set of credentials that has changed recently?

These types of things are almost always an oversite of one change affecting something else unexpectedly.

(The plus is they are usually easily fixed once discovered - cross your fingers.)
