Notes and Symphony don't follow Mac OS standards

I just realized this…

In the Mac world, when you click on the red X icon in the upper left corner of any application window, it closes the window without exiting the application. To quit the application itself you have to use Application name - Quit Application name option on the menu or use .

The only exception to this rule are the Lotus applications: Notes and Symphony. When you click on the red X icon it actually exits the entire application, which is kind of unexpected and at times undesired.

Please fix in the next release to match the rest of the OS X operating system.

Subject: Info

Hi Alexandr,

This is a known design item for Notes and Symphony. While most Mac apps do not close when you click on the red X, some do, including Mac’s iPhoto application that is native to the operating system.

Thanks for your feedback,

Sarah

Subject: Close application when close box is selected

Actually, there are a number of standard Apple applications that behave in the manner where when you click on the red close button, the applications DO quit. Given that Notes and Symphony are “document-based”, I would agree that they should remain running.

Quoting Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines:

In most cases, applications that are not document-based should quit when the main window is closed. For Example, System Preferences quits if the user closes the window. If an application continues to perform some function when the main window is closed, however, it may be appropriate to leave it running when the main window is closed. For example, iTunes continues to play when the user closes the main window.
