Notes 802 questions

We have been running v7 for a long time very successfully, but have started to upgrade to 8.02.

However, my big concern is the 802 client seems very slow - I know there are lots of features in the mail ui now (which is how we sell it to the users) but if it is too slow, it will be a disaster.

For example, I can delete a bunch of emails, and it will do so fine, then I will delete another and it will take 30 seconds. There seems no pattern to this, and the email being deleted is normally small (a simple text email) so I can’t work this out.

I am actually using Vista, and we are planning to go back to XP as it has caused soooo many problems - is it likely to be faster when running on XP? Or do we just have to accept that the new client is slow. (I know there is a basic option, but that doesn’t have the new features, so won’t be acceptable to the users)

Also, we used to have a number of our own features in the mail template (for example, we displayed the file size as a warning above the main mail outline) in v7. Now I can’t change this - I suspect the left and right hand columns in the mail template are composite applications. Can I edit them? Does anyone know of a good tutorial on creating a simple Composte App?

I also have a major problem today with the ‘choose location’ dialog popping up every 5 minutes - I have raised this as a separate post.

Finally, as we have the CEO licence, does this mean we can install Sametime - the chat would be useful, but even better, the display of who is logged in would be great.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

just a quick reply to one of your questions.

“Now I can’t change this - I suspect the left and right hand columns in the mail template are composite applications. Can I edit them? Does anyone know of a good tutorial on creating a simple Composte App?”

This is actually default enable in Notes 8 and the mail 8 template. As soon you have quota set it will show up as little green/red bar in the outline. You dont have to make any changes in the template for that.

Hi,

I suggested deploying the Standard Client to all machines, but running in Basic Mode. This way, for machines that don’t have the appropriate resources, you can run in Basic mode. Then when your able, switch the user to Standard mode. In 802 you can use the parameter, UseBasicNotes=1 and push it out via policies to select users. Now, the 802 Standard will run slower than a 7 Client. You’re loading a ton of java and Antivirus also loves to scan it all. So, I’d only install the features you actually plan to use. The quota indicator is available in 802 Standard, but you need a mail8 template and 8 server to see it.
