Notes 8 mail folder design backward compatibility

I’m sort of a newbie with Notes and had a basic question on backward compatibility.

Our server has been upgraded to 8.01. I was going to replace the design of the mail folder to 8.01 to begin utilizing some of the additional features. However, I also have a 6.5 client that I would not upgrade at the same time.

Would I still be able to access the mail file that has had the 8.x design applied from the 6.5 clint?

Basic functionality will work (such as ability to send, receive, and read mail) using the 6.5 client. However, there are many features, such as Preferences and C&S (Calendaring and Scheduling) which are not supported using earlier Notes clients.
