Notes 8.5 Crashes consistently on Fedora 10

Hi there

Many of our users have switched over to Fedora 10 at our office. A problem that we’ve encountered is the notes client crashing whenever an e-mail is opened that has an image included.

Can anybody offer any advice on a possible solution to this problem?

Cheers

Subject: could you post an nsd file?

would like to review a crash call stack.

Thank you

Subject: nsd file?

Where would I find said file? It’s not in my lotus home directory.

Subject: nsd file is under IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT dir in your notes data directory

I hope you can find a file name starting with nsd_xxxx.login IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT under your notes data directory.

At a crash, notes generates this file and may give you dialog box where a log is located in your system.

thank you for your help.

Hi,

For the benefits of others, can you post the FATAL THREAD section of the NSD files with the few lines under it

In this example, it’s for Windows but it will be similar for Linux

For example:

Subject: Notes NSD File’s

It seems that notes is not generating these nsd files on my system. I only have console log files, but no nsd files.

Subject: nsd file

The IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT directory on my linux system does not have any nsd* files… it only contains console* files.

Subject: Problem Solved, kind of…!

Well, after finally cracking down and installing Fedora 10 on a test system, the Notes client works perfectly on a base install. The issue, i discovered, appeared after performing a system update. I’m not sure which update caused the issue yet but i’ll keep exploring the issue.

If anyone has an Idea i’d appreciate some feedback.

Thanks again to all who offered assistance.

Subject: Problem with xulrunner-1.9

Hi,

I kinda traced the problem and found that the xulrunner is the cause of it. I guess Lotus crashes on xulrunner versions greater then 1.8 (I am not sure though). This is why Lotus works fine on Fedora 9 and Fedora 10 base install. But once you upgrade the system, the mozilla will be upgraded to 3.0 beta 5 or 3.0 which upgrades the xulrunner to 1.9 release. This I believe causes the crash when the lotus tries to use the Gecko runtime for rendering webpages.

Thankfully, Tudor’s fix " File → Preferences, “Disable embedded browser for MIME mail” seems to work fine!

Regards,

Harsha

Subject: Could you provide detailed reproduce steps or send a sample mail to me? We cannot reproduce this problem by using 8.5 GM build and 8.5.1 latest build on Fedora 10. Thanks.

Subject: Re: Reproduce Steps

The problem occurs each time I open my notes client on my laptop and I open an email with an image. Many of our users are complaining about the same problem. I’m not sure how you could replicate the problem but it’s easily replicated in our environment.

Could I provide logs of some kind or any other files? If so, which logs?

Subject: Besides nsd file, could you help to check if you are using using 64-bit Fedora or 32-bit. Thanks.

Subject: 64-bit or 32-bit.

I’m using a 32-bit version of Fedora 10.

Subject: Notes 8.5 on Fedora 10

Hi

I can confirm that Notes 8.5, and also 8.5 beta, crashes on Fedora 10, latest patch level, 32 bit. I have noticed that most of the emails on which notes crashes seem to be coming from Exchange, the text is always bluish in color. I wouldn’t put the crash in connection to the emails w/ images, I have some emails w/ images coming in just fine and I can see them w/ no problems w/o notes crashing.

Please let me know guys if you need anything from me, like logs, core dumps etc. I am more than willing to help w/ this.

Thanks,

Tudor

Subject: Re: Notes 8.5 on Fedora 10

Hi

I have a fresh core dump + javacore + the email that triggered the issue. How can I send them to you guys ? Anywhere I could upload the files ?

This what I am getting in /var/log/messages:

Feb 17 12:09:46 kernel: notes2[32034]: segfault at 0 ip b7dd316d sp bfc945f0 error 6 in libj9prt24.so[b7dcb000+1f000]

Subject: Notes Crashing Under fedora 10

I have had a similar problem with notes 8.5 crashing under fedora 10 (32bit)

I can provide the dump log file if needed.

I also had a similar problem under Beta 2.5 when accessing a certain webpages with the Builtin browser.

I have no problem under RHEL 5

(Prefer fedora 10 though with KDE 4.2)

Subject: Notes 8.5 crashing in Fedora 10

Hi

I did a little research on this issue and I found out on some forum that checking the Advanced Option under File → Preferences, “Disable embedded browser for MIME mail” would fix the issue. Tried it and it seems to be working properly now, no more crashing on the same emails that Notes used to crash before. I guess I’m a happy camper for now …

Good luck
