I just downloaded Lotus Notes 7.0 for Mac OS X, and when I try to open it the following dialog box appears:
“Unable to access data directory ‘/Users/myname/Library/Application Support/Lotus Notes data’ using Preferences file ‘/Users/myname/Library/Preferences/Notes Preferences’. OK”
And the program doesn’t open. I already switched the “Lotus Notes data” folder to the Preferences file, and then it tells me the same, with the switched folder. I trashed the program and files, and re-installed it again, to no avail. I passed DiskWarrior and corrected Permissions, and still the same.
I’m having pretty much the same problem with my Mac. Specs are very similar to yours – G4 iBook, 10.4.8, etc. If you’ve figured out how to get around this problem, please post. If I figure it out, I’ll post back here. Thanks.

Deal! I’ll ask in the Snarkish mostly-Mac forum (do you know it? There are some very knowledgeable people there) and will let you know if anything worth turns up.
Did you ever get this fixed? If not I would try putting the Lotus Notes Data folder at Library:Application Support: Lotus Notes. This is NOT the user’s Library but the one at the hard drive directory level. Notes doesn’t play well with multiple users. Considering it still can’t remember your preference, that’s not too surprising. My Notes preferences are in my user library.
Go to the Notes data directory and do a Command I.
You will get the Get Info property box. Expand out Ownership and Permissions. The owner in my case was username and the Group was none. Change the group name from none to either username or Wheel with Read and write permissions. When done click on Apply to enclosed items to propagate to all items in the folder.
Hey, I finally got around to looking at this thread again, and taking another shot at getting Notes running on my Mac.
Patrick’s advice was right on target. My Notes data directory was set to owner: system - read/write and group: staff - read-only. I changed that to set myself as the owner with r/w permissions, and set the group to “wheel”. It’s working now. Thanks!
I don’t know much about the Mac permissions system, by the way. Anyone have a clue why the data directory gets set up with the wrong permissions in some instances?
Had the same issue - for some reason during an upgrade from 6.5.5 the permissions on some of the Notes executibles changed. Check the file permissions and change as needed.

Hi, Patrick:
I already passed “Disk Utility” from the Tiger Installer DVD and corrected the permissions. How then do you check the file permissions and make changes?
