Notes 6 client over ISDN extraordinarily slow

We have a remote site connected back to our data center via ISDN line (full 128Kbps). We just installed the Notes 6 client at this site, there’s only one workstation, and found that the performance is unbearably slow. It takes well over a full minute just to open the user’s inbox after clicking the icon on the welcome page. Everything for the client is installed on the workstation’s local hard disk, and the PC is a P3 1GHz 256MB machine, so it’s plenty of horsepower. No other network traffic is hogging the ISDN line, the Notes RPC traffic pretty much has the full 128Kbps to itself. Is it normal for performance to be this stinking slow? I was under the impression than using the full Notes client for email over even a 56K line was at least tolerable. Is there some performance tweaking that can be done to speed things up? The user really does not wish to resort to using the web browser for mail.

Subject: * Caution with network compression r6 client to r5 server – I had problems with preview version. =B-)

Subject: Not to worry…

… we’re running exclusively version 6 here, will even wait awhile before attempting 6.01

Just deploying from scratch with r6 (replacing ms exchange envorinment) has been adventurous enuff.

BTW, the local replica does the trick quite nicely… in fact several of our local users who only have 10Mbps connection to their desktop have opted for the local replica also, and understand the downside of getting their mail delivery slightly delayed by a short time until next replication scheduled event occurs, and the possibility of losing a small bit of work if their local hard drive crashes in between replication events… they understand and accept these caveats.

Subject: Hmmm … you may still have work to do …

“only 10Mbs” – you really shouldn’t be needing 100Mbs to get good speed. Suggest you have your network guys check into routing issues and so forth. How many machines on each net segment? Just sounds off to me.

=B-)

Subject: RE: Hmmm … you may still have work to do …

Well, since I am the network guy, I know exactly why the 10Mbs link is slow… it’s on a single, overloaded 10BaseFX fiberoptic link from another building back to the computer room in the main building. Simply too much traffic since too many desktop machines were added to that other building that were never part of the orginal network plan. We will get to buy 100BaseFX transcievers to increase that bandwidth constriction when new budget money becomes available soon but until then, the users just have to deal with sluggish network performance.

You are pulling the mail database design over the ISDN line each time.

Far better to have a local replica of the mail on the PC and the ISDN line simply replicates to send & receive email

Agreed A Local replica is the best. There are also a couple of performace tweaks.

When connecting to a Domino 6 server you can set the ports on Client and Server to Compress Network Data.

The new default Streaming replication will also help.

  • It pulls the entire design each time e-mail is launched?? What???- How about when e-mail has already been launched, but minimized, and I’m just maximizing it because I received a new mail notification? Even on a 3.3Mbit/sec link (that routinely delivers a minimum of 2.8Mbit/sec and often gives full bandwidth) that takes a lot longer under R6 than it did under R5. R5 was nearly instant, but R6 takes a good five or six seconds. What’s up with that?

  • Considering the bandwidth at my disposal, R6 runs pathetically slow, compared to R5. I’d expect better performance, not significantly reduced.

  • Are there any plans in the offing to fix this?..

Subject: * Absolutely you’ll want a local replica of most things. Also remember initial view build times can deceive. =B-)
