Newbie: "copy" operation in Discussion Database postings

“How to grab text from a discussion entry”

Total newbie not receiving help from sysad.

Am I even addressing the correct forum?

When I use the Discussion Database, I can post a new message, I can reply, or reply to reply etc.

But one thing I can’t do is highlight text from a posting, and ‘copy’ it, either to paste into a Word document, or to paste into a discussion reply (with quote marks) so the point of my comments is clear. The ‘copy’ option simply doesn’t appear.

I can’t get anywhere with ctrl-c either.

Is this the way it’s supposed to be – and if so, is there any workaround?

I should add, that I have browsed around at this site looking for information, but probably not very effectively. If anyone could simply point me to a relevant thread, I’d be grateful.

If you cannot print either, then I would guess that you don’t have permission to forward/copy documents in the database ACL.

Thanks. It’s certainly true, that when I enter a document, ‘print’ is greyed out, even if I ‘select’ some text to print just part.

I am asking our IT guru to look into this.

I appreciate the help.

You don’t need an “IT guru”. There are three places to check – the database ACL (which requires Manager access to change), the form’s security tab (“Disable forwarding/copying/printing”, requires Designer access to change), and a field called $KeepPrivate (which will appear on all “disabled” documents, and requires write access on a document-by-document basis to remove).

The most likely culprit, though, is the ACL, since it’s the only one of the three that does not require a deliberate change. All it takes is for the person who set up the database to have forgotten to ensure that a checkbox was selected in the ACL. Fix that and your problems will go away.

Subject: newbie: “copy” operation help – EFFUSIVE THANKS

Thanks very much to Stan Rogers and Bruce Stapley for helping solve my problem.

The IT person who created the database gave me the Editor rights I had requested, but in this unaccustomed step, neglected to enable Printing/Forwarding/Copying To Clipboard in the Form.

So I was the only one struggling [but didn’t know this since I am currently the main contributor to that database]…

Many, many thanks for taking the time to steer me on the right path.

Ciao

The ACL option (in the English-language version, anyway) is “Replicate or copy documents.” The other possibility is the Disable printing/forwarding/copying to clipboardform property.
