New to Lotus and I am struggling

Hi there,

I am totally new to the lotus domino / notes environment and have acquired a trial copy to setup and test. I have managed to install the domino server on my Windows 2K server and the domino is now up and running and seems functional.

I then proceeded to install the administrator on my Windows XP desktop but this is as far I can get. I am having real trouble understanding how to connect to and administer my server. I managed to work out a way to connect to my domino server, but it whinges about corss server certificates. Also, I must have messed up when I first ran the administrator as now the system thinks my name is gregory orton/gregory orton, and i am guessing thats why it whinges about certificates. I have tried using the administrator guide, but I don’t really get it and don’t find it that helpful.

Can someone please help guide me through getting connected?

Many thanks.

Greg

Restart from scratch - uninstall everything.

then Install the server

Start the server, follow the prompts, in the process it will create an administrator user and id, save it in the domino directory(not good practice but will do for now)

Once the server is running, then install the client/designer/Admin software

Launch the CLIENT software and follow the prompts.

After that all should work fine.

When you ran the Client software (installing the admin client installs the regular user client as well), it asked you if you wanted to connect to a Domino server. Sounds like you answered No.

Domino’s security concept is based around a trusted root topology. If you tell the setup wizard, that you don’t want to connect to a Domino Server, Notes creates a new ID file for you. But this ID file has no certifiers in common with you server’s ID (they don’t know each other at all).

There are ways to correct this problem manually. As a beginner, it might be the easiest approach to uninstall and reinstall the clients and run through the setup wizard again. Always start the server before you start your client.

There is really much more this all than I can cover in this posting. Have a look at the official documentation. Once the system is up and running, you have it all available as online help, of course, but that won’t help you beforehand. Go to

www.lotus.com/doc

click on Domino Server and search for help files in PDF format. “Installing Domino Servers” is a pretty good primer. There is also a “Notes and Domino Quick Start Guide”. Currently, this seems to be available for 6.5 only (although I think I’ve seen it for 7 before …), but most of the stuff still applies.

Have fun.
