New Domino server hard drive configuration

I’ve read a lot of the posts on the forum about the best setup for a Domino server, but want to just ask a couple of things, so any answers or experience would be useful.

We’re a small company, around 100 users but expanding. Currently have 250GB of data, increasing all the time. Mail file sizes average 3-4GB, with maximum around 10GB. Also applications are on the same server, mostly smallish, couple of larger ones.

Performance isn’t a great problem, but as we’ve started running out of disk space on the server it’s getting worse, so I’m upgrading in the new year.

New server will be HP DL380, quad-core Xeon 2.3GHz, 2-3GB RAM. I reckon this is good enough, if you have any comments on this feel free to say.

What I’m not all that sure about is the hard drive configuration. We’ve always used 2xsmall drives RAID 1 for operating system, then 3-4 larger drives RAID 5 for data. Server has 6 hard drive slots.

Is this the best config, or should I consider RAID 1+0 for data? That would give us just 2x hard drive capacity, which isn’t quite enough (would only double our current capacity, I want more than that).

Could I use all 6 disks in a single RAID 1+0 array and just partition it to separate programmes and data? I’m assuming I’d lose some of the benefits of the RAID speed (haven’t found any info on this)?

Or would a 4 disk RAID 5 array for the data be sufficient still, with RAID 1 on the other two?

I’m planning on using software RAID that comes with the server - again, any comments?

Other details - we have a cluster, so this would be two servers. We have transaction logging turned on (currently logging to programme partition), but don’t use it for backups.

Appreciate any advice on this

Many thanks

Dan
