Network Installs

I have 32 people who could need to access their notes client from any one of 32 machines. I looked into the roaming profiles, but it does not replicate the desktop6 file. The user must have the exact workspace on the new machine they log onto as they had on their usual machine. Is there a way to have a networked install of notes so people have access to their data directory and notes ID’s so they can move around?

Would it be possible to have everyone default Notes data directory residing on a File Server (everyone have the same directory structure). When the person signs on to that machine, the mapping would take them to their own Notes data directory, where their specific id file and deskdsk file resides.

This is possible (we use it in one of our departments) but, as far as I am aware, is totally unsupported by IBM / Lotus. There could also be a problem in upgrading such a set-up as the programs would reside on the PC and the data directories on a networked drive. You would need to upgrade all uses at the same time.

I have a file server that I can use to host the needed directory structures. I am aware it is unsupported, but this is a wanted feature this department requested. The upgrading of the PC’s would take some time but I have a Saturday coming up anyway. So all of this can be done, but I am not exactly sure the “proper” way to do it. If there is a redbook or some kind of resource available it would be helpfull.

I think I’ve got this figured out.I did an install keeping the notes directory on the C: drive.

I put the data directory on a mapped drive on the file server.

I moved the notes.ini file to the data directory.

I changed the short cut icon to point to the data directory for the notes.ini file.

In active directory under the User’s profile tab I put in the profile path: \servername\Profile%UserName%

Then under their Home folder path for the mapped drive:

\servername\directoryname%UserName%

This way no matter where they sign in their windows profile follows them and the mapped drive to their own private directory for notes.

Is this the way it should be done? Has anyone tried this and seen a heavy hit on network performance or problems?
