NetApp performance

We are thinking about replacing the storage system where Domino server’s data directory is stored.

Our Domino system has ca 600 users, half of them on LAN and half of them connecting over the internet. Currently, the data directory is stored on HP MSA1500cs on a dedicated RAID10 array consisting of 4x15krpm SCSI disks. Transaction logs are on local disks (dedicated RAID1 of 2x15krpm SAS disks).

There are 3 other servers connecting to the same storage, but they are not as IO hungry as Domino.

We don’t seem to be any major performance problems, although I occasionally hear our applications admins talk that “it could be faster”.

We are now being offered a NetApp FAS2020 device. The people who are selling the NetApp are saying that “NetApp with SATA disks will be faster than your existing MSA with whatever SCSI disks you have”. Interestingly, these are the same peolple who also sold us the MSA some years ago, so on one hand I can’t discard their talk as purely competition, on the other hand I find it hard to let go of the standard “get as fast disks as you can for the Domino server” attitude.

It is very difficult to find any performance numbers about NetApp, and the ones you can find are usually comparing NetApps with SAS disks with midrange EMC CX devices, so they are not much use to me.

Is there anyone here who has real life experience using NetApp for Domino data, and what do you think of the performance?
