We are looking for a way to programmatically create/broadcast a private view via an E-mail (using a button or hotlink). The E-mail sender nor recipients have ACL access to “Create/update shared views” and we can’t give it to them, so this Email distribution is an alternative we are considering. Problem is, I’m not sure of a way (without using 3rd-party software) to programmatically generate design objects such as private views with LS/Java classes or formula. Any ideas?

The difficulty is we don’t have access to add design elements (e.g., Shared, Private on first use view) via the application therefore we need a creative solution w/o going to each individual’s PC to create a private view one at a time. Any ideas?

I suppose you could always capture the creation of the private view as a keystroke macro and email that to everyone.
The desktop private view is stored in the desktop file, which is stored in somewhat the same format as a Notes database. You might be able to access the note in there and export it to DXL, then send that as a file attachment along with a control that brings it in to the user’s own desktop. I haven’t done that.
If there’s a need for this to let users use the application effectively, why are the application owners making things difficult for you?

Jeffrey has a good idea. Alternatively, there are ways to simulate the functionality of private views, which are demonstrated in the sample database you can download from here.

I believe you’re thinking about a Shared, Private on first use view. Then you can just send users a view link.

Could you be more specific about what you want the user to be able to do?
