ND6 ODS Structure

I have both Notes/Designer 5 and 6 installed on my PC. I know that’s not supported but I don’t know another way to start learning and developing in ND6 while still designing R5 databases.

The problem I’m having is when other people e-mail me databases. These databases are created in R5 environments (no 6 clients or servers). I open the e-mail with the R5 client. When I detach or launch a database, it is in ODS 43 structure. I must close the R5 client, Open ND6, open the database and make a new copy with the .ns5 extension. This is bad enough, but if the database has enforce consistent ACL, I can’t even open it in ND6. The person who sent the database sent me an id that has manager access to the database and works before the database is e-mailed - I get an unauthorized access error.

Is there a better way to do this? Can I prevent an e-mailed database from being put into ODS 43 when I receive/attach it? Does ND6 handle enforce consistent ACL databases differently?

Thanks,

Subject: ND6 ODS Structure

Hi Kimberley,We’re in a mixed environment with R4.6.7 and R5.11 servers, and clients ranging from R4 to R6.0.1 (we’re testing in preparation for upgrading to R6). I have R4.6.7, R5.11 and R6.0.1 clients on my PC(running XP) and at times have all three running at once - including admin and designer clients for R5 and R6.

I have just tested what you detailed above firstly from R4 to R5 where I copied a database (i.e. new copy) off an R4 server to an R4 client, attached it to an email then detached it from the R5 client and the ODS remained as 20. I then tried with a new copy of a database off an R5 server, attached it to an email in the R5 client, sent it to a second address I use and detached it and it had retained ODS 41. I had all three clients open at the time, the icon of the database attachments is the R6 icon in all clients, but the ODS didn’t change.

My assumption therefore is that it’s something to do with the installation of your R6 client. I know this is a bit of a pain, but can I suggest that you uninstall the R6 client, test the process in your R5 client (you may want to reinstall R5 over top of your existing R5 client to ensure that no files or registry settings have been changed following the R6 uninstall) and if you get the correct ODS then reinstall R6 and see if you still have the problem.

I hope this helps. Mike

Well, it was a good idea. I uninstalled R6. I reinstalled R5 (5.0.11) over my existing R5. I deleted the e-mailed database. I asked my customer to resend the database (in a zipped file). The icon is now the R5 icon (expected), but when I try to open the extracted database I still get invalid nsf structure and can not open the database. Again, the customer sending the database does not have R6 anywhere.I also used R4 and R5 on a single PC without a problem (though I never opened both clients at once).

Mike,

Mystery solved. The customer who does not have R6 installed anywhere actually does have ONE test R6 PC…

Don’t you just hate that about that!!

Oh well, at least you’ll know you’ve got a clean re-install of R6!

Mike,

Thank you for taking the time to test this. Yes, it’s a pain to uninstall and reinstall, but it’s better than the ODS structure problems. I’ll let you know how it works.
