ND6 Client - memory optimization

I’m evaluating a micro-notebook for our mobile workers. It uses WinXP Pro as the OS. The memory is fixed at 256MB and is not expandable. Notes does run fairly well with this amount of memory, but if you have any other applications open things become very unresponsive and I’ve already had the OS freeze a few times. Is there any way to reduce the amount of memory needed to run the Notes client? Thanks!

Just to add to the urgency of your post, I have the same question as well.

I run Notes 6 on Citrix, and the memory resources comsumed by the new 6x client is flat out absurd. Many users often exceed 70-80-90+ meg per session, and they don’t use Notes as a browser either. With the resources I see Notes Consume on a Dual Xeon with 2gig RAM, I can only imagine what it’s doing to your laptop. The notes web client appears to be a bit leaner, but not much.

Yeah - I tried running ND6 on the Mac Mini, which comes with 256MB - Performance had been very good even with four or five applications running. Then I tried to run Notes… each screen refresh took over 10 seconds. I upped the RAM to 512 and now Notes runs, but is still slow.

Is it just me, or did Notes 6x take a real performance hit over 5x???

I should clarify that Notes does not run slow on our Citrix boxes. While it’s not as ‘zippy’ as Outlook, it’s not a dog either - likely due to Citrix caching some of the routines with more than one user having it open.

Memory though is another issue. Each open mail message seems to consume at least 5-meg or more, and that eats of gigs of RAM in a hurry I’m guessing murders a laptop. With Outlook I had some tricks to reduce memory utilization, but Notes is at least 3-4x the resource footprint, and I’d love to find a way to put it on a diet.

I noticed that R7 Beta4 takes much less memory than R6 (6.5.3).

Memory Usages:

After opening Notes:

R6: 42MB

R7: 27MB

After opening a large Domino Directory (default/Person view):

R6: 53MB

R7: 32MB

After opening a LS/Formula extensive business application Form:

R6: 57MB

R7: 34MB

Lotus stated that R7 will consume 25% less resources, and that seems to be true.

I am using R7 Beta4 as my only Notes Client, and haven’t encountered any problems with it yet, not with Beta3, and also not with Beta2. The performance is much better than in R6, databases open faster, and less memory is consumed. And I am using Notes to design/maintain business critical applications.

You should consider using R7 Beta4 also on your MiniMac, as R6 doesn’t run there properly anyway.

I’ve heard the same about R7, but thanks for confirming the rumours.
