Multiple relay host

This is the configuration:

There is a Lotus Domino Server with SMTP:

  1. Foreign SMTP Domain

Internet Domain: .

Should be routed to Domain: TheInternet

Then there are two SMTP connection Documents:

Destination Server: Relay1

Destination Domain: TheInternet

SMTP MTA relay host: 10.10.10.1

Routing Cost: 1

Scheduled Connection: Enabled

Connect at times: 00:01 - 23:59

Repeat interval of: 5 minutes

Destination Server: Relay2

Destination Domain: TheInternet

SMTP MTA relay host: 10.10.10.2

Routing Cost: 1

Scheduled Connection: Enabled

Connect at times: 00:01 - 23:59

Repeat interval of: 5 minutes

SMTP- Mail- Routing enabled

There is no Relay host configured in the Configuration document of the server…

It should route mail to . partly by Relay1 and sometimes by Relay2 but Server route only by Relay1.

Please dont ask, why we do something like this.

I change IP adress in connection document for Relay1 to invalid IP, but Server stops sending email to ..

But tel it ALWAYS routes its mail to the Relay1, even the mail to Relay2.

Does anyone know ?

Thanx

Marek

Subject: Multiple relay host

Dear Marek

I know you said ‘Don’t ask’ but are you trying to do this for failover?

You can’t do this with the same source server on both connection documents. It will always use the first connection document alphabetically listed, which is why it uses relay1 all the time. It won’t load balance across the 2 relays.

The only way to get it to use the relay2 connection would be to DISABLE the relay1 connection.

People often have a relay2 as a failover so that if relay1 is not available they can disable relay1, enable relay2 connection and mail will still route.

Is some of the mail to a particular SMTP domain?

You could split it then by having 2 foreign SMTP domain documents and a connection doc for each…

Try enter two relay hosts in Domino Configuration documnet: Relay host: 10.10.10.2;10.10.10.1.

Subject: RE: Multiple relay host

I am looking to provide a failover path for outbound SMTP routing two non domino SMTP servers. The help documentation mentions setting up MX Records in DNS for a DNS name but being able to simply put a couple records in a field is quite a bit easier.

This post is similar but gives the example in brackets around the entire string and separates it with a comma. .

Does two entries work in the Internet Host field on the Foreign SMTP Domain document and the SMTP MTA Relay host field on a SMTP connection document?

If not does the example in the main post provide failover if Relay1 was unavailable like it does for standard Notes mail routing?

Thanks,

Randy
