Multiple Notes user unable to log on because portions of document is encrypted

We have a PC which is shared by 5 shift users. All users log on using the same Windows Active Directory account however each user has their own Notes ID and mailbox. On the PC there is only one Notes installation and one data directory. All 5 ID files are located in the data directory and all share the same desktop and private address book.

We have three PC’s in the business which are configured like this and each one is shared by 5 different users and they’ve run without any problems for a few years now.

However recently the following has started to happen. Ocasionally at shift changeover, when the person who has just started their shift selects their ID file and enters their password, they get the message “You cannot access portions of this document because it is encrypted and was not intended for you.” Notes then closes. Each time they open Notes and try to enter their password they get the same message and Notes closes. In the end I have to play around with their setting before I can get it to work. (for example get one of the other users to log on, delete the connection document and recreate or reinstall Notes and recreate the personal address book etc etc.) It then works OK for all users for a short while then suddenly it starts to happen again to one of the users.

I have performed many Internet searches and this message appears on many different forums however the problem is always caused by something else and I’ve never seen this exact problem before so I don’t know how to fix it.

We are running Domino 6.5.4 and the clients are 6.5.x to 7.0.x

I have exactly the same problem at my end. I still have this problem to date, and what I do is delete the encrypted LOCATION documents and recreate them.

I suspect the encryption is because of some user preference setting which encrypts all saved documents in NAMES.NSF. I have not really sat down to explore this, but I believe a workaround (if this is a big issue) is to have each of the users store names.nsf, *.id and notes.ini separately in their respective home directories.

this will definitely prevent accidental encryption of any document in a common names.nsf.

let me know if you somehow manage to find out the cause of the problem. i havent had the time (nor is this a big issue in my organization to warrant my immediate attention) to look into the root cause

Thanks for you response.

Actually there is only one data (home) directory and all 5 users share it. So they all use the same personal address book (names.nsf) and desktop.ndk. Perhaps this is the problem? Having said that, we’ve had this configuration for several years now and it’s always worked well in the past so why are we getting this problem now?

If I find a solution I will post it here.

In the meantime, does anyone else have a solution?
