I am a new Notes client user (6.0.1). I have my main internet email setup OK, but am confused about how to go about setting up Notes for additional email addresses that I use. Is it as simple as setting up additional databases??
Most of the email addresses I have are with the same ISP, meaning the incomming and outgoing server names are all the same, just with different usernames & passwords. But I have a couple of email addresses at different servers (web hosting provider, yahoo). So, I don’t think that just adding more databases will do.
Like I said, I’m new to Notes, and don’t really get the overall big picture of how Notes works guite yet (I’m learning). I am using it at home in place of Outlook and Netscape. We do not have Notes at work (stuck with Microsoft). Any help here would be appreciated.
(I do have Domino Designer 6.0.1 loaded if I need to use it, but don’t really know how to yet).
Notes was never really intended to handle multiple personal email accounts, it’s designed for enterprise messaging, corporate environments etcetera. That’s why Notes isn’t really easy configurable to do this.
I would probably try to solve this with location documents. In your location document, you can specify an internet address (on the basic tab, and you can use "Common Name"common.name@isp.tld format) and a mailfile. This allows you to havea completely separated mailfiles and internet address per location.Then you could create account documents per location, too. This way, switching locations would mean switching identities, mailfiles and the relevant POP/SMTP-accounts.
There is a problem with having more than one POP account per ISP however. You need to use a workaround: the first pop account can have the pop-servers’ hostname, but a second/third/etc must use the POP servers’ ip-address.
Thanks again for your time. I’m working on this. Does the smtp server name setting suffer the same problem as the pop3 server name. I ping’d and got ISP’s for both.
Also - I now have a new location (Internet2), and a new copy of the mail database. What I don’t really get is how to link the new mail database to the new location, or vise versa.
The SMTP server account doesn’t have the problems that the POP accounts have, so no worries there.
To tie a specific mailfile to a location, edit the location document, go to the Mail tab, and enter the path/filename to the mailfile to be used with this location, in the mail file field. The filepath is relative to the Notes data directory, btw.
Dont forgert to do the following when editing a new location document with a different internet address - Actions, Advanced - Set update flag. This will allow you to set the internet address and not have the client pull down your normal internet address from the NAB.–
