Multiple Address Books

When you select a group to send an e-mail to multiple people, does it look in the Domino Directory first or your personal address book? if you have a group called “Staff” in both address books which one does it select by default. The Staff Groups maybe slightly different. We have people who use the Domino Directory, a Public Names Directory through Directory Assistance, their personal address book and the rights to their supervisor’s personal address book. If two of the address Books have the same group name but different members, then what happens? Thanks for your time.

Address lookups happen as follows:

  1. Local address books in the order they are specified (NAMES= line in notes.ini)

  2. Directory server specified on Location document (usually user’s mail server)

  3. Directory Assistance, in the order directories are specified

In your example, if you have a group called Staff in any other directory specified in the NAMES= line in your local notes.ini, this is the only group that would be used. I don’t know of any way to circumvent this, so hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can help you with that part.

I know the default search order in the location doc is “Local then server” but in Notes 7 I thought there was a new choice added to the list for Server then Local? Maybe I am mistaken. I don’t have 7 yet so I cannot confirm this.

I’m running 7.0.2 client and this is not available…do you need to enable this somehow?

EDIT: Nevermind - RTFM illuminated me

Nathan, could you point me to where in the help you found any information on this? I don’t see that, either. I’m on 7.0.2, my server is also 7.0.2, and I just replaced the design of my local address book with the new template. I don’t have that option available and I can’t find anything in the help that explains it.

Thanks,

Charles

From the release notes:

Note that this field is only visible if your mail file location is set to “Local”.

That makes it close to pointless for me, but I guess there is hope that it may some day work for server-based mail files.

Nope, not in R7. I think it’s coming in R8.
