Moving users from Server A to Server B

We have 2 servers in a cluster, 1500 users are working off of Server 1. I would like to split the load between the 2 servers.

How do I go about moving half of these users to Server 2?

What is the best and esiest way?

Thank you

use the admin client, there is a “Move to another server” task.

FYI: It’s a good idea to make sure that Server B is added to the ACL of the mail files before going forward with the change.

I see under “People and Groups”, I highlight “People”, this gives me a list of all users and shows which Mail server they are pointing to. I highlighted my name and selected “Move to Another Server”. It’s been over 30 mins. and my entry still reflects the same server, so I manually opened my document and changed from Server A to Server B.Even though I am working on a local replica, will this now change my replication to work with Server B?

thank you

AdminP processes ALL of the changes automatically. You need to be patient. you should not have changed it manually. look up the task in Admin Help and it will show you exactly what happens and when. It takes a while for everything to process so you just need to be patient. you can open admin4.nsf on your admin server and check the status of each step in the process.

Well now I am wondering if this is what I want to be doing???When I look in the Admin console, I go to the Server-Monitoring tab. I see Server A has 1500 “Users” and Server B has 100 “Users”. To me this represents the number of connections to each server. I’d like to have these numbers somewhat even or in other words load balanced.

Is my original question the correct question to resolve this?

thank you

if you’ve got 1500 users and 2 servers in a cluster and you want to balance the load your best bet would be to have 750 users per server. All 1500 mail files should have replicas on both servers for failover reasons but if you go to your Mail Users view in the dd you should see approx the same number of user’s assigned to each server as their home mail server. Then I suggest you read up on load balancing in admin help and in the forums and white papers found on LDD. You cannot move a user simply by changing the server name in the person doc. The user’s location doc on their client also needs to get updated as well as the icon on their workspace. The adminp request mentioned earlier takes care of all of this for you. The only issue you may come across with using the adminp Move to another server request is that the request may fail if you already have a replica of the user’s mail file on the other cluster member. This is because AdminP tries to create a replica on the new server but if it already exsists I don’t know if it fails or identifies that a replica already exxists amd moves on. you’ll need to look at that.

Paul,Thank you very much for the calrification, this does help. our situation is almost exactely what you mentioned…meaning.

We do have all mail files replicating between the 2 servers.

But when I look, all but a handful are assigned to Server A for their Home Mail Server. This is what I would like to find out how to do the correct way. Actually, there is a reply to my original stating this can be done via the “Move to Another Server” request in Domino Admin.

Subject: Please use the Activity Trends feature when moving the users.

You don’t want to just choose 750 users randomly, and with Domino, you don’t have to! Activity Trends will help you decide on the right 750 users to ensure the load on the servers is balanced. It is an AMAZING tool.

Look at this section in your Domino Admin Help DB.
