Missing messages in sent item

Users are sending messages but not not leaving a copy in the in the sent folder. what might be causing this and how can resolve it. your assistance is highly appreciatedNeema

Did they change the setting in user preferences to not keep a copy of sent mail?

no actually strange thing is that majority of messages are saved in sent items but sparadically some are not
