Migrating to "8.5.1 Roaming" when a user is already "Roaming"

Hi,

I am looking for some advice:

A number of users are currently configured as users who have their data directories on a network share drive (S). The client is currently 6.5.4.

We are moving to 8.5.1 and wondered how easy it would be to start using the roaming policy features (File Server Style).

I think the way it works now will still work in 8.5.1, but I would like to know how things would work when a user who is on the “old style, manual, custom roaming” is set to move to the new policy driven roaming.

Having looked at the Wiki Roaming User Quickstart Guide, I understand that all the “Local” files will be moved to the defined server location. As the source and destination are currently the same in our case, would this cause problems?

I would not try to upgrade to roaming with your databases already on a remote server. All testing around roaming is done with local databases. Roaming does not access the files directly on the file share when the client is started, data is replicated to and from the file share.

So my recommendation would be to go back to the “normal” supported client mode (local DBs) , and then upgrade your users to roaming.
