Migrate Unix Notes DB on Windows environnement!

Peace be upon those who follow the True Guidance,

Let me tell u about a small situation,

Lotus Notes Databases are now on Domino 7.0.1 on SUN SPARC (Unix).

We extracted those DBs from domino on a .tar from Domino V7 Unix into a VMWare W2K3 Windows 2003 Virtual machine.

And we would like to access and modify those DBs on windows with Lotus Clients V7 for Windows.

Once modified and updated on Windows by Win Lotus Clients, we would like either copy back those DBs on Unix

or refresh Unix DB design with a Windows DB templates.

We are not sur that Unix LN DBs, once updated by Domino Windows Server, will have the same behavior!!

Do you see any inconvenience or compatibility problems when doing that ?

Any help would be appreciated…

Thanks in advance, RBZ.

First, if the Windows clients can connect to the Unix box, just do that and don’t worry about moving files around.

If the Windows clent boxes can’t connect to the Unix boxes, is there any way you can replicate the files between servers?

Finally, you could connect a Windows client to your Unix server, replicate the dbs to the Win client, move that box to the Windows server environment and replicate the files up to the server.

I’m no Unix guru, but I don’t think you can just move the bare files around between OSs so replication may be your only route.

Thanks for your answer, but we don’t want to set S/S or C/S replication.

The need is just to have the same notes DBs on Domino Windows as in Domino Unix on two separate environnements that don’t communicate 'cause in different networks.

The DBs on Domino/Unix are for production and DBs on Domino/Windows are for testing and dev purposes.

Please find more details on the answer topic below:

Hello Rachid,

Does Domino reside on the Windows 2k3 machine? If you intend to access the files solely via a Notes client, by what means (other than Notes/Domino server-server or client-server replication) will you utilize to facilitate the copying back of the data?

Thanks!

Subject: Using/Migrate Unix Notes DB on Windows environnement ?

Hello Dan,

Before all Thanks, we have two different environnements :

  • The first original Domino S V7 reside on Unix Sun Sparc 5 which is the production environnement.

  • The second Domino S V7, added by us, reside on the W2K3 VMWare Virtual Machine (WVVM).

This WVVM has been installed to have an environnement for developpement and testing purposes.

As u know, there a Notes Clients and Domino releases for Unix and others for Windows. we have the both four V7 releases.

As we are not able, at this time, to create the same Unix/Sun environnement on a testing machine, we took the DBs located on Domino Directory from Unix/Sun on a tar file, put them on this WVVM and extract them from tar into the Windows Domino Directory of the second V7 Domino S.

No Domino S/S or C/S replication needed at this time.

Our first need, is to test, via Windows Notes Clients V7 (WNC) on the WVVM, if those applications will have the same behavior as on Unix/SUN ?

If no problems, we need to be sure that accessing and modifying via WNC those DBs (At the start working fine on Unix) on the Windows second Domino S will not corrupt their design and/or content created originally on Unix/Sun ?

And by the way, is there any problem if i update DBs residing on Unix by WNC from windows ?

Sorry for my english  Don’t hesitate to request more details.

Thanks in advance. RBZ

Have you successfully moved a notes db from the Unix environment to the Windows environment? Successful = you’ve been able to open and use the db in the new environment.

If the move has not been successful, then the question is how do you transfer NSF files from Unix to Windows when the two envirnments are not physically connected. I suggest you’ll need to sneaker net the file between environment using replication. Connect a windows laptop to the unix servers. Replicate the file to the laptop. Move the laptop the your windows environment and replicate it up to the server. You’re NOT using replication to keep copies on Unix and Windows in sync, you’re just using replication as a means to convert the file from a Unix format to a Windows format and back.

If you have been successful moving files from Unix to Windows, then the question is ‘do they work the same in both environments?’ The short answer is that they should; Lotus/IBM does a great job of keeping things working. The longer answer is ‘that’s why you do testing’. Verify that the apps work the same in both environment.

If I’m still not understanding the problem, feel free to try explaining it again.

Thanks for your help, i appreciate that. Let me tell you “May Allah swt give you back good things for that”.

Here’s some abreviations used in my answer below :

  • Env. : Environnement

  • WVVM : W2K3 VMWare Virtual Machine containing Domino V7 for Windows

  • SunOS : Unix SunOS from SUN

  • WDS7 : Domino server R7 for windows

  • WNC7 : Notes Clients R7 for Windows

  • UDS7 : Domino server R7 for Unix SunOS

  • UNC7 : Notes Clients R7 for Unix SunOS

Your question was “Have we successfully moved a notes db from unix env ?” : Yes, i think. we didn’t try to open all dbs but just one.

We are a company that manage projects and apps for our client or Customer (a big company that own the project) and

they pay us for that.

In the Customer Env., the DBs reside on UDS7.

but, in our company, as we are not able at this time to create the same env. (SunOS) as our Customer, our manager

suggested to create WVVM which is easier to manage and work… on this WVVM we have a WDS7 and WNC7.

Beside that, a colleague of mine extracted from Customer UDS7 the DBs Directory using tar command, transfer it via FTP and copy it

on a USB HardDrive and finally copied this tar file into the WVVM.

And i’m in charge of testing and verifying that those extracted DBs from SunOS to Windows will have the same behavior and in case of accessed on WVVM by WNC7 will not corrupt their format “NSF = Notes Storage Facility” to prevent corruption of design elements or content saved in file “.nsf”.

Thanks in advance,

RBZ.

Hi Rachid,

Thank you for the detailed description. I believe I do understand your requirement to test the functionality of your applications between the two different platforms in your environment. What you should find is that Notes/Domino templates and applications are platform independent, and the functionality exhibited on Solaris should be the same on Windows.
