After upgrading from 6.5 to 8.5 the preview pane in email appears regardless of if it was enabled or not prior. Can someone tell me where the configuration is kept?

It appears that even after a couple of years to this day, and at least two fix pack releases, the issue remains yet unaddressed.
Its been quite sometime now since I, too, have been facing the same situation. Sometimes, the preview pane stays hidden as I intend it to be. But more often than not, it stays open regardless of what I choose to do with it - hide or show.
Can someone from the Lotus Developer team please help?
