Hello,
Since we migrated from Notes/Domino 5 to Notes/Domino 6 the mail files are much bigger!
This happened really only by the migration.
Did you experienced the same?
What to do other than bigger quotas?
Any ideas?
Thanks for each input!

Yes indeed mail files do get bigger. The base empty database size for a standard mail file is doubled (from approx 6MB in R5 to 12MB in ND6). And the iNotes template is even larger.
The new LZ1 compression does reduce the size of attachments when stored BUT only on new attachments or resaved items.

In response to “The new LZ1 compression does reduce the size of attachments when stored BUT only on new attachments or resaved items.”, you can run AttachZIP on any mail or app db and it will convert all the attachments hence shrink the db size by up to 40% or more.

At least it did for me. Got “unknown type of compression” errors until I turned LZ1 compression off again.

Not just PDF’s - any attachments. It is a known bug that is fixed in 6.0.2, though.

You may not know, but 6.0.1 did offer an enhancement of single source templates. What this features offer is the remove of the base template code from the .NSF. To use a small example, the R6 mail template is about 11.5 MB and if you have 100 users you are using 1150 MB or 1.15 GB just for the database design elements. Well what the new feature is 6.0.1 offers is to not have the design template in the physical .NSF which will reduce the size of the database. Thus, giving you back 1.15 GB disk space as in this example.
I am writing up a step-by-step process of how to enable the process. I will post this conclusion here.
HTH Cheers If you can’t wait then email me it is in my profile.

not sure what to do you mean by a step-by-step process, but there is a redpaper covering this new features with a fully described guide and more

At the time of the message, I did not know there was a red book. I did the whole single copy template without having read the red book. I was just going to duplicate what the red book has. Now it saves me that work.

Hello Joe,
Thanks for your answer. Very interesting enhancement: I may wait until you wrote your process, I have enough disk space for our users at the moment but I was astonished to see how the mail files increased!
Many thanks!
